What am I doing wrong?

So I lost 6 lbs and went from 220.9 to 214.7 in about 1.5 weeks. Lost another 2 lbs and then gained back 6 lbs all in one day. I don't know what I'm doing wrong? Can someone look at my diary and tell me? I work out almost every day for 40-55 minutes depending on my energy levels and at that rate I should be losing steadily.
is it the diet?

Stop weighing every day. Your diary is closed so can't comment on calories or macros. Why are you working out almost every day?
Weight loss is'nt linear. Try just working out 3 times a week. Open your diary
  • Wait let me open the diary.
I workout everyday because I feel like blaah if I dont. Plus Im only doing Zumba so its fun :)
  • Ok opened!!

I've only quickly looked at your diary, but you should be aiming to NET your goal calories. So you should have a net of 1700 at the end of the day. If you exercise, you need to eat those calories back. MFP already builds a deficit into your calorie goal, so making more of a deficit by not eating back those calories can actually hinder rather than help your weightloss attempts.

    Good luck :flowerforyou:

This is true. How are you getting your calorie burns? I've heard that MFP overestimates, so I only eat back half. Still, you want to eat back some, especially if you're working out every day. Personally I think at least one rest day is a good idea.

Also, if you ever gain a bunch overnight, it's water. You don't track sodium but I suspect that it's the culprit. Also, new or intense exercise will result in water retention. You say you gained 6 lbs overnight, so think about how many calories it would take to do that. One pound of fat is 3500 calories, so you would have to overeat by 21000 calories.

If the normal fluctuations in weight are going to mess you up then don't weigh every day. The scale is a trending tool.

Edited for early morning typo :)
  • The same sort of thing happened to me. I lost 3, and the next day I weighed myself again, hoping for some miracle and I had gained it back. I do have a bit of a cold though, and had 3 cups of french onion soup, and it is made at a dining hall, because I work in a very secluded area, where we stay at a lodge/camp.

I avoided soup and just stuck to veggies, eventhough soup makes me feel so cozy when it's -45C outside. I've been drinking herbal teas and lots of water, fingers crossed that avoidin the salty soup will cut the water retension back...

Add me if you wish - I have no friends... lol

I just joined on the weekend. We're starting at the same weight too... I was 220lbs and had dropped to 217lbs. I'm hoping to lose 10lbs a month for my wedding.
  • Thanks guys for all the input.
Im alternating between JM SHred and Zumba. Mostly end up doing about 50 minutes of Zumba because its easier on my knees than the lunges and squats in the shred!
I will definitely try what you guys have mentioned!
  • Any differences yet? I still haven't lost a thing since i posted this, and i haven't cheated... not even slightly...

Eating cleaner and more whole foods will work wonders for weight loss. Give that a try, you will be amazed!

    Try eating better foods.

Whole grains, fibre- berries are good ones and the fibre will keep fuller for longer.

It's 80% what you are eating remember.. try and stay away from the pizza and the brownies. Protein- chicken, beef, fish. Whole grain rice is good with broccoli.

You didn't gain 6 lbs of fat in one day. It's water weight. It could be too much sodium in your diet, could be TOM, could be some other hormonal cause, could be a food intolerance. If it happens repeatedly, review your diary for patterns of foods eaten just before the gain.
