Can anyone tell me why the IRS isn't processing the returns until Jan 30th?

    Because of the post 11th hour "acts" by congress, the IRS could not begin the 2012 until a week later than usual. If you have things like rental properties and what not your return might not actually be processed until some time in March. They have a list of the documents that affect the processing date of your return on their website.

    They have to get their computer systems set up for the new form layouts due to those last minute changes.

    Some of the forms aren't even available yet if you have a complex return.
