Canal boating and exercise

Hi my name is Melanie and I live on a 57' narrowboat with my husband Clive. We spend most of our time cruising the inland waterways of England. There are many locks on the canals and they take quite a bit of energy to operate, winding the paddles up and down and opening and shutting the heavy lock gates. Any suggestions as to how many calories doing this type of work would burn up? Or any suggestions for an equivalent type of exercise? Thank you in advance.
