Hello everyone!

I have 20 lbs to go till my goal weight but I want to be toned by that point as well. Will strength training achieve this? I do HIIT workouts as well as cal workouts.

What does strength training include?

Thanks in advance!
Nicole

  • Strength training should be a component of everyones fitness program. Yes it will help you achieve your goals.

Strength training generally includes any activity where resistance is added to overload the muscles causing them to become stronger.

New Rules Of Lifting for women is often recommended here. As a man I have no experience with this.

I can tell you that you should lift with large compound movements
    Pushups / Bench Press
    Pull ups
    Squats
    Deadlifts
    Overhead Press
    Bicep Curls

Use weights heavy enough to cause you to fail (you can't do another rep) somwhere between 5-12 reps. Lower reps will build strength / mass without increasing size much, higher reps will build endurance / size

    Do 3-5 sets per exercise
Do full body Resistance Training 2-4 days per week
  • Start with 5-10 lb weights if it's not hard move to heavier weights. NOTE: IMO
I started with 2 lbs and its like like my muscles were laughing at me saying " where's the challenge in that" lol

Thank you both! I just dont want to hurt myself as I have not done much strength training in over 2 years since I was pregnant back to back. I feel like I forgot how to workout LOL but I have NO upper body strength so I want to get that back
