What helps you push through the pain of that last rep?

Whether it be finishing the last 3 squats, pushing yourself to sprint the last 30 seconds in your cardio, or whatever else you might struggle with, how do you make yourself push past the pain to get it done?

My old trainer told me to concentrate on something infront of you, and find a place in your mind where you won't feel the pain. At first I didn't know if this was possible, but with practice I think I've been able to do it! This has helped me through so many painful exercises and I always feel amazing after. I also find that my breathing helps a lot too... I always exhale on the hardest part of the rep. It's crazy how much energy it gives you to get that last rep in!!

What does everyone else find helpful?!

  • My trainer told me that our biggest obstacle is our mind, so I would stop telling myself that I was at my limit and that I could do more. And when that didn't work, I thought about how much I could do if my bf was right there watching me...then I really stopped slacking. haha

lindaamarie, my trainer said the same thing! It's really helped me push passed the pain! I don't let myself think that I can't do anymore. I don't give myself a choice, do 12 reps, there's no other option!

bostonwolf, are you able to keep your adrenaline pumping through an entire 45 minute workout? how do you do it?! i find mine wears off after the first couple sets!

Breathing, of course, but also a "I am not letting this f***ing barbell (or whatever) beat me today!" attitude.

I'm a "talker". I trash talk the process, the weight, and talk up myself...even if it's just in my head. I also pray. Sounds hokey, but I do--and it works for me!
