Increasing distance with knee injury

So I have been experiencing knee pain for about 1.5 months and I recently had an MRI and visit with a Sports Medicine orthopedic doctor. Basically, there are a lot of things wrong with my knee, but running does not cause pain during or after. My doc was awesome and told me I could keep running, but recommended not increasing my mileage and to incorporate more cross training. I will start PT to see if that might help my knee recover and the pain decrease. I was so happy he didn't tell me to stop running, that I didn't think to ask about my future running. I will see him again in a month and will be sure to ask, but I am wondering if I should just expect to stick with my current distance and monthly mileage or if I will ever have a hope to increase. I am hoping that others have been able to recover and gone on to continue running for a long time. Just for reference, I am 36 yrs old and am running a little more than 40 miles a month with a longest distance of 5 miles.

Whatever you do, don't do this.

IMHO you should stop running and start swimming until PT is over. You want long term health. But whatever good luck.

^ HAHAHA.. yeah definitely agree, don't do that. I think you should follow your doctor's advice.. he will tell you when you are ready to add mileage. Do your regular thing then jog or walk or a combo of both for a longer distance. I personally wouldn't push it too hard cause once you have knee problems, its hard to really go back to where they were before.
  • LOL. I am definitely going to follow doctor's advice. I do not want for this to get worse! I was just hoping to hear from someone who said - yes, I had terrible knee problems and I followed doc's advice and did my PT and now I am running 60 miles a month. A girl can dream....

I have occasional knee pain when running, I've never gone to the Dr. about it so this is just my experience. What seemed to help is increasing the amount I walked instead of increasing miles right away. After a couple months I increased my miles again and haven't had much of a problem since. I'm sure my knee is different than your knee, but I really feel that it did get stronger, so I would think you could be optimistic about PT helping you!
