Reccomend Vegitarianism?

Would any veggies ( or vega
ns) reccomend becoming a vegitarian in terms of dieting/weight loss/cravings, e.t.c.....?
Considering it, and would love to hear peoples views, stories before I commit :-) (p.s - feel free to add me!)

I love being a vegetarian. I never want to go back. When I first went veg I gained a lot of weight because I ate a lot of carbs and no protein. MFP has helped me chenge that by monitoring my macros. A veg diet is an easy way to get rid of not so good fats like saturated fats (the kind that are solid at room temp). Watch out for cheese though! It kills me in Sat fats. After this cheese is gone I am going reduced fat. Fat isn't bad but going over isnt good.

check out the group happy herbavores.
  • Sounds good, will do... because i'm only doing it for diet reasons, i'm worried about controling meat cravings (i've never been a big meat eater, but when my protein levels are low, i get huge cravings) , do those eventually pass with time? Does that happen you?

    Hi,

I've been a vegetarian for 14 years and I would highly recommend it. You have to make sure you are getting enough protein and iron though and you need to supplement your diet with things like lentils, chickpeas, and beans. Check out this link:

I also highly recommend getting a copy of a book called, 'The Higher Taste,' you can find it on amazon, here's the link:

This book teaches so much about the whole experience of being a vegetarian; from the ethics of eating animals and the spirituality factor involved in this process, to sound nutritional advice. This is a must read for anyone thinking about adopting a vegetarian lifestyle. I have read many books and articles on vegetarianism, and this tiny book has the most thorough information I was able to find- it's a wealth of knowledge and I lend it out to frinds all the time. (I'm a High School English teacher, so I'm always reading books and looking for good new ones).

BTW- in case you're wondering, my weigh-gain was caused by quitting smoking a year ago, getting married 7months ago, and dealing with my father being ill. This all happened this year and caused me to put on 25lbs. I turned to junk food like chips and fast food for comfort-I stress eat. Otherwise, I have always been slim and at a healthy weight, and I contribute a big part of that to being a vegetarian.

Good luck in your pursuits to a healthier, meat-free, diet. Feel free to email me with any questions.

Why do you think cutting meat and fish will help you lose weight? Just carry on eating the modest amount you do but only lean cuts not high fat or processed rubbish, or reduce meat and increase oily fish and other seafood.

And sorry to be harsh but wanting to get back into a size zero dress you wore at age 15 is not a healthy goal. That plus cutting out whole food groups simply to lose weight is a fast track to disordered eating.
