Need to be Good at the Crawfish Boil Tonight

From Februaray thru June, we'll have 5-6 (or 20?) crawfish boils. It can be a little salty, and it's always spicy. Not good for those on a diet. I've lost 14 lbs over the past three weeks and have some good momentum going. But, our first crawfish boil of the season is tonight. I suppose it's not that the crawfish is so fattening, but it's all the fixin's that go in with it, mainly potatoes, sausage and the darned salt. And don't forget, I have to wash it all down with a 6-pack (or so) of Bud Light.
I suppose moderation is key. But, I might as well face it right now. I'll be over the limit on my calories when the day is done.
For those that aren't familiar with this sort of party/tradition, here's some pics I had saved from a few years back...

I love the veggies because they soak up so much of the spice. Maybe try and limit some of the starchier sides. I have no clue how many calories crawfish have, but I do know that boiling them is far better than frying the meat
You could also try bringing some fresh veggies/salad/fruit to eat as a "side dish" to help limit how much of the crawfish you eat. A random search of the database gives a huge range of calories (for 5lbs in shell anywhere from 250-550 calories). That said, I'd chow down on five pounds and throw in an extra workout.0 -
do it brother!!! a single of day like this is not going to instantly put the weight back on!!! You already mentioned you got the skills for this. And my guess is you physically wont be able to consume as much food as you did before anyways. Enjoy you day and get back at it tomorrow.:drinker:0

I love a good crawfish boil. I think the solution is easy. Spend some time figuring out how many calories it's likely to be and then plan around it. Even if you were over by 1000 today (which I doubt you would be if you take it easy till you have the party), you could more than absorb that over the course of a week by eating a bit less.0

Yes, I can see your problem. We do this same sort of thing at the boat club we belong to except it' s with lobster, steak and steamers and all things you mentioned and yes, alcohol. It's hard to stay in control around this but, the last one we had I did okay. If you have been good most of the week I would say not to worry, just get some activity in and don' t make it a domino effect. I know easier said than done but, as long as you keep your progress in your head and how much further you want to go, you will do fine.0

Thanks fellas. Good advice. I'll try to limit myself to 1-2 small potatoes, 1-2 chunks of sausage, maybe a mushroom or two, 1-2 corn and crawfish itself.
I guess the biggest problem is how to log it into my diary on my iPhone app. I try my damnedest to log everything I eat. The diary thing has been missing all this time. It's an awesome tool.0 -

Yep, agreed. Depriving yourself on one occasion can lead to a serious binge (if you are anything like me, I'll get pissed I didn't allow it and lose all control). Let go for this event and get back on.0 -

I posted before I saw this. I was kind of thinking the same thing. Eat real light breakfast/lunch, log dinner into the app as "Crawfish Boil - 700 calories" and track how many Bud Light I pour. Should work.0 -

Tiffany - LOL Re Jealous. Sorry. :glasses:
The plan of attack. I entered my estimate. I might go +/- on any of these, but it's only an estimate right now. Well, an estimate and something for me to aim for, a plan, before going to our friends tonight.
And I also need to remember, this is not Rocket Surgery, it's a tool to help me lose weight. Anyways, I was pretty close with my 700 calorie guess. If I skip lunch and stay with this plan, I'll almost have enough room for a 6-pack of Bud Light! :drinker:

Too late for last night's party, but some other things to consider trying:
Traditionally one sucks the juices out of the crawfish head. Skip that part to drop the sodium a little.
Note that mushrooms have not precious much in terms of calories, so you might could fill some belly space with more of those. However, they are also little sponges, so they may soak up lots of the sodium. Try one with a nice clean palate before starting in on other salty or really flavorful foods to get an idea how salty they've become. Or consider asking whoever is minding the pot to fish you out a few mushrooms early so they don't completely brine up.
Love a good Cajun boil, but then I have to watch the temptation to dip some of the veg and shellfish in butter too!0 -

As it turns out, I did pretty good with the food. I think next time, I'll stay away from the sausage. I did have an issue with the Bud Light though. I took too much with me and wnet way overboard and drank most of it.
All good. Yesterday I made up for the event. A little cardio and a big drop in net calories. :happy:0
