Anyone have tips for not regaining weight loss long term?

Hi I joined about two weeks ago and have been checking out the forums. Something I have noticed recurring is where people say they have been here awhile ago and they are coming back to get serious, or to lose weight they have put back on. I am just interested to know the reasons, I mean I understand there are multiple reasons for becoming overweight or struggling with weight issues from an early age etc. I am just curious about gaining weight again after reading 'success' stories.
I have never really been a committed 'dieter' myself, not especially because I love food, I found I lacked stick-to-it-iveness after the first few days. So mostly I have just tried to eat healthier. I gave up sugar. bread and potatoes a year or so ago, with no change in my weight. They seemed to be the big no no's.
In a way it makes me think of having an addiction of sorts, not especially for food but for the extra distance we have between people. Or maybe it is food? For me I am usually comfortable for the distance it gives me, like an extra boundary if that makes sense. - this is me thinking out loud.
Even though I am happy as I am, I know my body isn't, I am getting older and feeling the weight I am carrying and its affect on my body, so I realise I have to do something about it.
But, I want to make a permanent change.
So just wondering are there any tips to the pitfalls of going back to old habits? Is it old habits?

Live by the motto: Eat to live not live to Eat
Also don't "diet". You should find something you can stick to for the rest of your life. If you aren't happy doing it for the weeks / months your dieting how are you going to do it to maintain your weight loss for the rest of life?0 -
Keep logging all of your food and maintain your regular exercise routine even after reaching your goals.
If you find it hard to maintain a large calorie deficit to reach your weight goal quickly then don't! If you instead set your calorie target closer to the maintenance level for your goal weight, you will have a much easier time maintaining that weight when you eventually get there.
Instead of racing to your goal weight to quickly, try making gradual changes that you can sustain. In this manner you will find it easier to maintain a healthy lifestyle permanently instead of being on a constant yo-yo diet.
Good luck! Believe in yourself and you will achieve all your goals0 -
you must make sure you eat clean foods and do high intensity interval workouts. people usually go back to bad habits or think hey i lost the weight it won't come back if i cheat a bit and then they end up gaining all the weight back soonafter. if u want a permanent solution you must be fully committed. learn to track your progress and NEVER EVER GIVE UP. I've had success with this fat losing program : dependableproductreviews(dot)com/the-fat-loss-factor-review/ I hope to permanently change my lifestyle by using these recipes which teach you to cook your own healthy meals and fat burning workouts. don't forget to log everything into your MFP log so you can keep track of your progress. Check it out and let me know if it helps you too.
Not this. You don't have to eat clean or do high-intensity workouts- though you can do either or both if you like. The key to success is slow weight loss, where you do everything possible to retain as much LBM as possible and not damage your metabolism, and then a slow deficit taper at the end. Developing a consistent program of activity that you can live with and continuing to get the right amount of calories for maintenance will keep the weight off. If you do the process correctly, you will learn how to incorporate the foods ypu like, good nutrition, and live your life while meeting your goals. The key is to keep in mind that you still have goals when you finish losing weight, and that goal is maintenance, so you just keep doing what you need to do to meet your goals. It will not be cumbersome or complicated- it will just be your life at that point.0 -
Lose your weight slowly. By the time the weight is gone you should notice your portion sizes and food habits have become part of your routine.
Quick weight loss doesn't form new habits as it is seen as a temporary fix so temporary eating only allows temporary weight loss.0 -

I always find ways to remind myself how far I've come. Of course it is nice to fit into smaller clothes, but even better is being able to recognize what this new body can do. We have a concert venue here that I used to love and hate, it's called Red Rocks. One of the coolest places ever to see a concert but quite a hike to get up to the seating area. Get all prettied up to go to a concert and be profusely sweaty by the time you get up there. So I used to dread concerts there and now we go there on the weekends to hike! It's a great feeling! Just one way I remind myself how much this is worth maintaining. My grandkids love that I am able to run around the yard with them too. Pictures are good too, keep them where you can see them. Good Luck!0

There is also a maintenance option under your goals menu. I plan on using MFP for maintenance. If I had MFP 10 yrs. ago, I would not have regained the 80lbs I lost after my wedding (pictures were awful!). Good luck!0

I've been here on maintenance on MFP for almost 2 years. Whatever you do to lose the weight needs to be something you can keep up for the rest of your life. And don't rush it. Keep tracking after you hit your goal. I do - it's a habit now and since most of what I eat is already on my favorites list, it takes just seconds out of my day. Always set new goals. I don't have a weight goal anymore because I'm already there, so I just set fitness goals instead. Gives me something to always be working for so I don't get complacent. :flowerforyou:0

Make a permanent change for the better in your life.
The main reason you see people coming back "to do this for real this time" is because what they did the first time around was unsustainable. They didn't learn how to eat and how to live. They just followed some fad diet. Learn how to eat and how to live and you're set.0
