if I slowly up my calories but still have a deficit and gain of couple of pounds, is that water weight or?

Usually people who up their calories will gain a few pounds at first, then it starts dropping off again. Give it 4-6 weeks before making any additional changes.0

I'm glad you asked this! The same thing happened to me and it's pretty frustrating
It's just important to remember that more calories also means more energy to do things, which I sorely needed. I just keep telling myself that better quality of life more than makes up for a temporary weight gain for a couple of weeks. I definitely feel your pain, though.
