Scared to lose weight after buying Bridesmaids dress

I wanted to wait to buy it because I had planned to lose around 30 lbs by July for my brothers wedding, but had to buy it a couple weeks ago. I have already lost 5 pounds, should I stop losing weight or can the alter the dress after losing 30 pounds? I want to look fantastic as it is a strapless and semi-short dress. Is this going to be a problem? Thanks for answering!

When I was gonna be a bridesmaid at my bros wedding (ended up not being one as they had to move the wedding up a lot early than they were planning and so chose to only have one bridesmaid and one groomsman). I tried on the dress and told the alterer that I was looking to lose quite a bit of weight. Asked her if I should get a size smaller or something. She said no, she could easily alter it to fit me when I lost weight.0

either get it altred or treat yourself with a new smaller size. keep losing!!0

Hi There
Im going to be a bridesmaid in August and I am looking at going to buy a dress next week.... Im not going to stop loosing weight as nearer the time if I am smaller I will be sooo happy to have the dress altered!! Stay on track dont stop loosing weight because of a dress0 -
i definitely think that you can continue to lose weight and have it altered....but maybe not 30 lbs....that could just be too much to take in. but i would think 15-20 would be doable. when does the dress arrive? maybe you can take it to a tailor when it arrives and the tailor can help you figure out how much could be taken in. but definitely keep working at the weight loss now!! you will look great.0

I lost weight after buying my wedding dress. I got it altered and it looked great. No excuses!0

I say just buy a smaller size then if it is still to big have it altered. Davids bridal has a lot of people on staff that can make the alterations without a problem. You goal is to lose the weigh the more weight you lose the better you will feel so keep losing the weight regardless of the dress.0

BE CAREFUL AND CHECK THAT YOUR DRESS CAN BE ALTERED BEFORE YOU LOSE ANY MORE WEIGHT.
I'm shouting because everyone here is saying "Yeah you can get it altered go for it!" BUT when I was a bridesmaid back in September, I had the same dilemma as you, and I checked with my seamstress and she said that because of the intricate design and pleating on the back of the dress, it COULD NOT be altered without ruining the design. So, I had to maintain my weight to make sure I could still wear it at the wedding.
So CHECK FIRST.
if you find out it CAN be altered, then keep going and don't worry about it! It's not very expensive to alter dresses.0 -
I went through 3 dress sizes from buying my bridesmaid dress till the wedding.. we got them from a place that had a good return policy. I still had to get my final dress taken in but it really wasn't too expensive. Trust me you will look more amazing if you lose weight! goodluck!0

You should make sure it can be altered first.
A friend of mine got a wedding dress there and it cost A FORTUNE to get altered so make sure it's also not too expensive!0 -
According to the website, alterations are available, and is based on the complexity and difficultly of each task, so you would have to see a specialist. But, you do a get a free consultation.
Then after you get the consult, you can shop around and find the best deal if DB is too expensive.
Hope this helps!0 -
My horror story of losing weight before my wedding goes like this:
I took kickboxing for 3 months before my wedding. I only went 1-2 times a week, but it was enough that I lost many inches (I can't remember off the top of my head exactly how many).
Anyway, I had to get my size 16 wedding dress taken down to basically a size 14. Which they did, and my 2nd fitting was over a month away from my wedding day. On my 2nd fitting, I had lost even more inches. So they took my measurements again and altered my dress. Then, about 3 weeks before my wedding, the dress was wrong. It was ill-fitting at that point and bunched up in some places and didn't lay flat in others, so they needed to fix it. At that point I had stopped doing the kickboxing and just did some yoga and light working out to maintain my figure for those last 2 weeks. Well...
It didn't go well at all. My dress felt so uncomfortable and unfitted to me, I cried in the bathroom. After fixing my makeup and deciding that "dammit, this is my wedding day and I'm not going to sit in here crying about this ridiculously expensive dress that makes me look like I'm wrapped in cabbage" so... I went out and partied the night away. And looking back at my pictures, I'm really disappointed.
SO... here's my advice: Don't go to David's Bridal in Brookfield, WI. And stop trying to lose weight at least 3 weeks before the event. More if you can handle it. Make sure that dress of yours is okay to be altered. If the smaller size is just a *tad* too tight, go with that one. You can always drop the water weight in a day if need be and still look good, but if you need a lot of alterations, that's where things get all hairy. Good luck!0 -

And I believe it's +/- 4 sizes before the alterations are more expensive than the actual dress - sometimes the dress has to be completely reconstructed! I bought a brides maid's dress for my sister's wedding and then went and dropped 5 sizes. With what I would have been charged to take the dress in I was able to buy a complete new dress! I was able to "sell" the old dress back to them.0 -
I'd check with David's Bridal and see what they suggest.
I don't know about bridesmaid dresses, but when my niece went from a size 12 to a size 4 before her wedding, David's ordered a new dress for her in the new size at no additional charge, because it would have been too much altering.0 -
I just bought a bridesmaid dress from David's Bridal and was told that they offer a one time exchange, so maybe check on that. I'm not sure if they have the same policy across all of their stores. My suggestion would be to keep going with your weight loss and schedule an appointment about 6 weeks before the wedding to make sure the size still fits/can be altered.0

i've bought a bridesmaid dress from tidepromdresses.co.uk and the dress didn't fit me perfectly because i lose my weight. But don't worry, it doesn't matter the dress is big. You just alter the dress to fit you. i suggest you will maintain the weight and alter the dress to fit you.0
