Are fruit sugars bad?

When I fill out my daily diary and put in the fruits that I eat I always end up going over my sugars limit for the day. Should I even count these sugars the same way I count refined, processed sugars or are natural sugars different.

    I think they are good or at least not as bad as the sugar in junk food. I have wondered about this too so I'll be keeping my eye on other answers.

    fruit sugars aren't bad for you. most people on here use the "sugars" to mean ADDED sugar, not naturally occurring sugar like fruits and veggies have.

    Ugh all those fat people you see eating apples and grapes.

    Its not bad for you at all, at least not in sensible portions.

    Diabetics have to track them, but for the average person, they aren't as bad as eating, say, a candy bar. They are still sugar, though, so if you're concerned, you can switch to some of the lower-sugar fruits.

    But honestly, I wouldn't worry unless you have to eat a low-sugar diet. Fructose and lactose (dairy) are different than glucose.

    I've read a few times that citrus fruits,like oranges help you lose weight(don't ask me how,I have no idea),and if this is true,how can fruit sugar be bad?
    Also,my grandma has been struggling with diabetes for a long time,it's nothing too serious,but still,and she's been using fructose instead of regular white sugar and since then,her sugar blood is no longer high.
    So,I don't know,I guess fruit sugars are not bad after all.
    Even though I think fruits are good,I don't eat a lot of them,because if I eat like 30 bananas a day,of course I won't be losing weight.

    You will get a LOT of different answers to this. :) Simply put, assuming you don't have a medical condition that requires you to watch your sugars, you don't need to worry to much about the sugars in fruits and vegetables. And really, if you are staying in your calorie range you don't need to really worry to much about the added sugar. If you are having a hard time staying in your calorie range then trying to cut out some added sugar can help because then you'll most likely be eating foods that fill you up more for less calories. That all being said, when you get closer to goal weight, or if you reach a plateau it may be time to revisit your sugars and then maybe you'll need to be more strict and/or get more information about it.

    I've always read that fruits are fine in moderation, but it is best to restrict them while losing weight. Go with what works for you. I try to eat more veggies and have just one piece of fruit a day.

    Just avoid juice, fruit as a whole food is fine and you would be hard-pressed to eat too much of it unless you are one of those that can just gorge on grapes.

  • I am not diabetic or on any special diet but I try to eat like a diabetic because diabetes runs heavy in my family. Thanks for the information.
  • I don't eat tons of fruit, maybe an orange or grapefruit once a day. I just don't like to see those red numbers in my diary!! Ugh.
  • When I put a fruit like an orange in my diary it automatically computes the fruit sugar grams. A medium orange has 17g of fruit. That sounds a bit much. If I subtract the fruit sugars I am within the range I need to be it I was just curious to see what others think about this. Thanks again everyone.

    I have never subtracted the fruit sugars. I'm eating a banana and an apple today and my sugar is almost at the breaking point. THere are such good nutrients in fruit that I won't cut them out. I probably could cut back on the banans though. :D

    If you are a dieabetic or have hyperinsulinemia, insulin insensitive, or have high triglycerides I would limit the amount of fruit you eat 2-3 small to medium servings/day. If you dont have any of the abnormalities then continue to enjoy your fruit its a better choice than other foods high in carbohydrate relatively low in calore and packed full of vitamins and antioxidants.

    That would be me. I could eat a pound of blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries if left unsupervised. I LOVE fruit. :)

    Still, I suppose it's better than binging on chips and other things with zero nutritional value.
