Changing routine = gain?

Hi all,
decided this week to experiment with eating back my exercise calories.
I know i haven't made the greatest food choices at times but overall I feel to be doing ok.
I had a sneaky look at the scales this morning, which I rarely do and there was over a KG of gained weight :O

Is this normal with increasing Cal's?
I'm happy to stick to it but I don't want to jump on in another 3 days and see ANOTHER kg gained.
What's a good amount of time to see if the theory is sound or not?

There are a number of possible explanations, but my first suspicion would be that you're over-estimating your number of calories burned.

You can't gain a kilo of fat in a week without eating 1000 EXTRA calories each day, more likely you have gained water - either TOTM or you have refuelled your muscles with glycogen (1g glycogen = 3g water) or salt intake.

Two things, try eating back half of your exercise calories or less and the weight gain is probably glycogen (water weight) if you've recently increased your exercise.

You could be right, I'm using my HRM and the Striiv app mainly ATM. I don't tend to count incidental exercise but do use half the app's burned calories if I'm at work.
It's a little scary but for the past 3 weeks I've had days where my net calories have been under 800 which also cant be good for you!
Perhaps dropping to half my exercise cals?
