Gap (among other stores) & Vanity Sizing

Does anyone else who wears Gap clothing notice how crazy they have gotten with their vanity sizing??
I am typically a medium on top, but depending on the sweater or shirt, I could end up with a small or even any extra small.
And pants?! Thats another crazy story!!!
In some of their cuts for pant styles I could wear a 2, and in others up to an 8!!
I was just cleaning through my closet, trying to put some outfits together for the week, and pulled out a pair of pin-striped Gap pants that I have had for probably 8 years. They are a size 6, and have been too tight for me to wear in a while. I was excited to find that they FIT (yay!!), but in jeans from the Gap I am currently wearing a size 4. It just seems crazy that the sizing is all over the place!

I just can't get my head around US clothes sizing at all. When see people talking about being a size 6 or a size 4, yet they can't be much smaller than me I don't get it. I'm a UK 12 and when I look that up on a conversion chart it says it's a US 10. Are these sizes that sound really tiny actually vanity sizes then? That would make more sense of what I'm reading.0

I am a different size depending on the store. Oh well.0
-
I wish there was standard sizing from store to store....
But I know what you mean about vanity sizing. The 6's I wore back in the mid/late 90's would probably be a 2 now.0 -
I've never noticed it at the Gap, but LOL @ Old Navy's sizing.0

Over the years sizes clothes have gotten bigger.. I can wear 14 now..it is slightly tight but I can wear it and I weigh 204.. 20 years ago when I fit 14 I was 170...0

I'm an American living in the UK for the past couple years, and yes, that is correct. US sizes are at least one or two sizes smaller than UK sizes, just as you said. UK 12 is US 10, possibly even a US 8 with the way sizes vary. It's crazy. Then try to work all that out with Euro sizes, too!
It would be ideal if sizes had some standard measurements worldwide, but I suppose that's asking too much.0 -
Drives me bonkers!
When I was at my heaviest, I was a 6/8 (US) in New York & Co for pants. Now I'm a 2 but for skirts, I think I'm going to have to be a 0... Old Navy, depending on the cut, I can be a 2,4, or 6. Gap is stil a 6, maybe an 8... I HATE it.
I'm a small in NY &Co tops, a Small Tall in some Old Navy tops, medium elsewhere.
It's so obnoxious0 -

Gap & Old Navy are owned by the same company. SO it makes good sense that both of them have WONKY sizes.0 -
I don't know about Gap, but I know Victoria Secret is insane with that. They have me a whole cup size bigger than everywhere else. I think it's so weird.0

I really wish womens clothing was like mens, Just inches and that's it. A 34/32 is always that no matter what brand.
Womens clothes I can be anything from a 5 to a an 11.0 -

I am a different size in different stores, different size in the same store depending on the cut of the clothing.
I do find that I am able to fit into a smaller size in the high end retail stores. Don't know if the clothes are made better or use more fabric.0 -

ME TOO! I bought 3 pairs of jeans yesterday, in two different sizes, which were both different than the sizes I currently have in my closet.
Keep in mind, I haven't lost or gained any weight in the past year. hah.0 -

Maybe for women, but mens pants at least have always been sized in actual measurements. Gap pants for men still stick to real sizes for the most part, Old Navy bears little relationship to the actual measurements of the size.
Used to be that if you knew your size as a man, you could be pretty confident that your size would fit you across all brands. Now the cut would vary, but the basics of waist and length would fit fine. This is no longer the case at all places, I still wear my actual size in Gap clothes, in Old Navy clothes I need at least 1 size smaller.0 -
I worked at a Gap Outlet for over two years. It's a pretty consistent inconsistency (heh) with them I noticed.... Their skinny jeans run VERY small and their dress pants usually ran a size small. As far as their tops went, it depended on the fit. If it was to be a loose fitting top, I found that they ran VERY large. I don't see it as a vanity sizing issue, though. I think it was more of a quality control thing. Gap, Inc. owns Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic. If you think about it, Old Navy is the worst as far as sizing and fit, Gap in the middle, and Banana always has pretty consistent fit, I've found. Which, if you think about it, makes sense. Banana is the most high-end of their brands, so of course their clothing is the best quality. Gap floats somewhere in the middle, and Old Navy is the cheapest. You can't really expect much from Old Navy if you're getting jeans for $15.
I think it pretty much lies in the quality control of the company you're shopping with. Higher-end retailers usually run alike (mostly in dress clothes which I basically live in), I've found.0 -

Tisnt - I'm 2 inches 'smaller' in the waist at GAP than anywhere else.0 -
I wish they'd do one of those overall sizings, the "store moguls" don't get it... The wonky sizings hurt us MORE than anything else, or at least it does for me. It kills me that at this one store I'm a six in jeans, in another store I'm a 10. WTF.0

Depends on the store/cut/etc....
For example. "I went to XXX and bought a size 10 Jeans"... well, which department did you buy it from? Misses, Juniors, Womens? Because they ALL have different measurements. Juniors are cut slimmer than missus which is cut slimmer than womens. It's all very frustrating. I truly wish women's clothing would be cut like men's. I know my husband is a 34/29. It would TOTALLY simplify shopping. But then, they can't do that for women, because you have to take into account hips, rear end, etc... ARG!!! Call it a 30/30 "Wide Load" for those of us with 'em. I don't care! but can we please simplify shopping for clothes just a smidge!0 -
Where it gets too too crazy is now they are vanity sizing shoes. I get why people might be loyal to a clothing brand for a smaller size. But I really don't feel more dainty when my shoes are too big. It just pisses me off.0

It always comes back to money. The more you are willing to spend- the smaller size you can fit into!0

Every store. Ugh. Went and bought new jeans. My old, looser pairs are a 5 and an 11. My newer, perfect fitting pair is a 9. The newer, tighter jeans I also purchased are an 11.
I have a size 11 and size 13 pair of shorts that are also too loose and too tight respectively.
Argh.0 -
US Clothing sizes have definitely changed over the years. When I was in my 20's (40 years ago), I wore a size 10. At that time I weighed around 115 pounds. Now at age 60 I weigh 123 pounds and wear a size 4 or 6 easily. Believe me, in NO WAY do I think I should be that size, but it is what it is. As we have gotten larger as a society, clothing manufacturers have found a way to make us feel smaller. I always wonder what this means for the models and celebrities that we see. What size are they??? A triple negative 0? I guess the bottom line is, it doesn't matter what size we can wear, but how we FEEL that's important, right??0

Good for business, people are going to shop at the place where they are smaller or bigger (bra wise). Stupid if you ask me. Feel bad for the person in charge of the dressing room when I bring them a pile of clothes that are too small or too big.0

my mom saw on tv a story about sizing. what they do in America is they add extra inches to the sizing you wear. America has gotten so obese. she wore a size 14 for a long time and thought I am doing good I haven't gained weight. when she found out how they did the sizing she was not happy.0

Gap and Old Navy are gateway mom jeans, anyway. Read this: http://www.graspingforobjectivity.com/2012/07/gap.html this blogger does a side by side comparison of Gap vs other not terribly expensive brands. She definitely looks a lot frumpier in the gap jeans.0

Ugh Old Navy is the worst. I only get tank tops there now because I know the 2xs are 2x. I bought a couple tshirts there that were 2x a while ago, and knew they wouldn't fit so I left the tags on. I tried wearing on yesterday and the first comment from my husband "it doesn't look like it fits."0 -
I always thought ON sizes seemed smaller?! not Bigger..
For the LONGEST time I couldn't fit into any Old Navy jeans. I was too large, they seem to only go up to a size 20. But I could fit into a 20 in regular jeans anywhere else I went, but not at Old Navy.
Vanity? At Old Navy? I am sorry, maybe it's my body type.. but I don't see it. As a matter of fact, I am STILL a 16 in Old Navy jeans ( I have dropped 20 lbs and still can't fit into an Old Navy 14), but I fit into smaller sizes elsewhere...I feel like they are either TRUE to size, or smaller...not bigger.0 -

YES! This is exactly the way it is! In the 70s and 80s, the smallest size that juniors came in was a size 5 or 7. Today that is size 0 and 00. A size 10 fit me at 130. The other day I bought a size 12. at 195 lbs!! That is just crazy.0 -
i just went to the US to do some shopping I am a size 7/8 over there and 9/10 in Canada. i liked the ego boost I got buying a pair of pant size 7.. lol0

Last week I was all excited that at Old Navy I bought a size 6 jeans, where a year ago I was wearing size 12 Lee Jeans. So being confident, I pulled out the one pair of jeans that I saved from the early 1990's and tried them on. I couldn't even get the button to within four inches together. So I took them off and looked at the size. They were a size 11. So before you go into that the old jeans were junior sized and the new jeans are misses sized, I also tried on my daughter's size 5 jeans. Those jeans also fit. I compared the old size 11 to my current size 6 and my size 6 is bigger at the hip than the size 11. I couldn't compare waist to waist since the old were high rise.0
