The right time...

What are everyone's thoughts about the right time to workout. Last couple of weeks it seemed like the only time I got a chance to workout was about 9 at night. But I thought that it might not do me any good since I would be going to bed like immediately after, Or it would mean I would be up until midnight to give my body a chance to cool down and me enough time to get relaxed enough to sleep.
Do you think that it is a good idea to go to bed right after a workout or should there be a a 1 or 2 hour gap between the two? Does it matter? I was always told that any exercise at any time was better than none, however the best "peak" time to workout would be somewhere in the afternoon.
