Exercise with injury

Hi all
Can anyone give me some advice for my 13 year old son who has unfortunately ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and cartilage in his left knee. He hasn't done any exercise since september but is very conscious about his weight and his body as he has been picked on. He is not overweight but is worried that he is not looking as toned as he was. His op is likely to be in the next 4-6 months (NHS lol) but has been told he can jog as long as it is in a straight line and on a flat surface. I have just bought a treadmill for the whole family with him in mind but was hoping someone may have some other suggestions on what other exercises he may be able to do.
Thanks in advance from me and my broken boy :-(
