consistency is everything?

I was listening to a Jillian Michaels podcast and someone asked what is the best time of day to work out. Her partner answered "whenever you have the time" But Jillian stated that consistency is key. Meaning if you work out in the mornings, then it's best to always work out in the mornings. Or if you go at night, always go at night.

98% of the time I do work out in the mornings before breakfast. That's not always the case though. Sometimes the kids have early appointments and I end up doing it in the afternoon. Wouldn't it be better for me to do it in the afternoon, even though I usually do it in the mornings, then to just skip it all together because I can't be consistent?

Thoughts?

To me, consistency doesn't mean same time. It means doing it, no matter what time. Some people will say for 5+ days "I don't have time". That's not being consistent. If your goal is to work out 4 times/week, then make the time to do that. Be consistent, but it doesn't have to be the same time each time, just so you do it.

I don't think that the two concepts are mutually exclusive. I don't know exactly how the conversation went down, but I'd say that you'd want to pick a time of day you can usually stick to because making a habit of exercising will make it easier to maintain long term. Sometimes life isn't consistent, though, and we can't do much to control it. So, in those exception instances, you should work out when you can.

I think it means you just have to consistently eat better and move more. Maybe Jillian was thinking someone would use that excuse I'll get to it when I have time.
