I went to recalculate my calories on scooby since I will be having surgery and will be inactive but should my TDEE be less than BMR??

My advice - don't try to lose weight while inactive. Just eat at maintenance, whatever way you calculate it.

You don't want to hinder recovery, nor lose LBM.

Considering you're eating at maintenance, that's very unlikely.

But the thing is, even if you DO gain a little bit of weight - few hundred grams to a pound, whatever - you can easily lose it again when you recover. If you lose LBM?... Not quite so lucky, there. It's harder to build muscle than lose weight, remember. So just eat at maintenance and you should be fine, and don't worry the details of gaining a little.

I've had some confusion with this lately. Calculated with several different calcs, I got BMR of *roughly* 1500 (as high as 1550 and as low as 1470) from all of them. But my TDEE -20% is ALSO 1500. So TDEE says "eat 1500 to lose weight in a healthy way" and BMR also says "You need AT LEAST 1500 minimum to be healthy". I expected a significant difference between the two numbers.

Did you put a deficit into your calculation? How big? For maintenance, set it to no deficit...if I recall on scooby it is lose fat, build muscle gives you maintenance. It is impossible for your maintenance level TDEE to be less than your BMR considering your BMR is your calorie burn in a coma. I also use the scooby calculator.

It's not possible for your TDEE to be less than your BMR.

Do you mean your TDEE minus a cut %? If TDEE minus 20% is lower than your BMR, that cut is too high for you. Try 10 or 15%, until you get a number between your BMR and your TDEE.

ETA: However, having sufficient calories to rebuild tissue and fight infection is EXTREMELY important after surgery. I would probably table your weight loss until you've recovered somewhat from the surgery trauma, and eat at maintenance for the short term.

Thanks all. I am just having a minor surgery, meniscal repair. It is the inactivity that is really going to be bothering me... I cannot even do upper body currently since I have a bad case of tennis elbow right now for which they will be injecting while I am in surgery. I will have to go back and figure what my calories should be at maintenance.

You could try putting down 24hours of resting...
