Looks like the BSA may be changing their tune...........

The Boy Scouts of America has long held the belief that homosexuals shouldn't be part of their ranks. Well with sponsorship considering being pulled (because many sponsors have a non discrimination policy), the BSA might cave in. Lol, goes to show that money can still buy some off.
Personally I DON'T support the BSA because of discrimination. Incidentally, even if the proposal went through, local chapters who are sponsored by say religious organization, can still impose the ban.

    read about this earlier - i say its about time..however im not a fan of local chapters still being allowed to discriminate. ill have to look into the local one/s and see what they end up doing if it goes through.

    What needs to happen is that local chapters that decide to be private entities CANNOT be allowed to use public schools for meetings, get togethers, etc. If they aren't willing to abide by non discrimination, then let them hold their meetings at private places like a church.

    Yeah, not good enough. They're basically saying "we aren't telling our chapters they *have* to discriminate, but they're still *allowed* to discriminate." I mean, really, would you shop at Target if Target, Inc., gave individual stores the authority to exclude minorities from shopping there? I sure wouldn't.

    Well I think that sponsorship is taking a serious look how the BSA operates as a whole. If money is being funneled from BSA to these discriminating chapters, and is found out, I'd like to see overall sponsorship pulled.

  • i grew up in the scouts, i still do a lot of high adventure things. the life experince and guidence i got was critical to how i turned out as a person and a father. i say it's about time. as long as people stick to the rules, no kids are ever left alone with an adult. thus there would be no problem or question. once this goes fully into effect there are a few gay guys that will be added to the group of leaders i take on trips with me. we do things like backcountry babckpacking, rock climbing, whitewater trips. all the leaders i take are from differnt troops and are people i know can handle any given situation in the backcountry.

    let them in

    My older brother, younger brother and I started in cub scouts. When my older brother realized he might be gay (he is) he consulted with my dad who said that homosexuals wouldn't be allowed in BSA. My dad decided at that point to pull all of us out of scouts so it wouldn't make my older brother feel bad.
    Thing is I had lots of school friends that did scouts and told me how much of a blast they were having and that I should rejoin. So because of this "rule" I didn't get to experience something that I think would have been really cool. Hence why I've not bothered to support the scouts. Now if they change their policy and local chapters end up abiding by the ruling, then I may start supporting and even volunteering for them again.

    the issue with the "local" chapters is that they are sponsoring organizations. Many of those are churches (with about 40% being LDS). with close to 70% of the sponsoring organization being groups that, for religious reasons, oppose homosexuality. While I do not agree with these sponsors, they are private groups that are allowed under the law to make their own rules.

    I am fortunate that the sponsoring organization for my scout unit has a more open view on gay civil rights and this has not been a problem. And with this new direction my unit will be able to be a better reflection of the whole community.

    This is a good thing and is a good move by BSA.

    He's cool. He retired as an emergency room technician and learned to be unbias when it came to saving lives. He told me one time about a doctor he worked with that didn't put in a lot of effort to save a woman who was African American and reported him. He practically got black balled after that and had to move to another hospital to finish his career.
