Cooking W/ Ground Venison
A friend of dh's gave him some ground venison (w/ pork added).
I haven't cooked anything with ground venison for years and years because dh doesn't like it, but is willing to try again. I've always loved venison steaks and we do have a couple of them for anther time too
So, what should I do with the ground venison-any good recipe suggestions? I thought about chili, but was hoping for some more ideas.
Thanks!

putting it in pasta, making soup with ground venison is SO yummy, like a ground beef soup yummmmmmm.
I use it for shepards pie, or really anything that would take ground beef.0 -
Chili, Hamburger Helper, spaghetti sauce, taco meat.
I get mine ground at a local meat market and I nor my family can honestly tell the difference between it and regular ground beef.0 -
mix italian sausage and make pizza, taco's! :drinker:0

I have done taco, chili, and peppers, onion, and sauce instead of sausage. Not anymore though, hubby stopped hunting :happy:0

I just use it in whatever I'd use hamburg in - jambalaya, meatloaf muffins, bolognese/ragu (veggie and meat sauce for pasta)0

Sloppy joes!!!! Yum!0

Ground venison makes me sad - I'd much sooner have it as a haunch, leg etc.
Having said that, I imagine it would be pretty nomtastic in burgers.0 -
Thanks for all the great suggestions!0

All of the above, plus a little something we call Nebraska Casserole. It came from the wife of a hunting guide in, you guessed it, Nebraska. I modified it to make it a bit healthier, lol.
Ground venison (browned and crumbled)
1 jar of your favorite salsa
1 can of low sodium cream of whatever soup (mushroom, celery, etc...)
2 slices of american cheese
Heat everything but the cheese to a nice simmer, then add the cheese to melt. They served with Doritos, I've used low fat crackers or pita chips and it's just as yummy.
I'm a fan of venison in any format I can get it. It's so lean and I truly like the gamey taste, though I understand it's not for everyone. Enjoy!0 -
I only cook with ground venison, and everything that you would make with ground beef you can make with venison. I always enjoy making something for a party with burger in it and having people who would never eat venison go back for seconds because they can't tell the difference. So I guess my advice is to cook it with anything you normally would and enjoy it because it is much healthier than ground beef. But nothing beats a good ribeye or T-bone.0
