"Net" is how many calories you consume AFTER any deductions. Deductions are figured one of two ways, but they both relate to exercise as exercise is what will change how many calories consume.
Let's say that you and I are the exact same weight, height, age and that we have the exact same activity level. Let's say we both burn 2500 calories a day. If we eat 2000 calories on any given day, our "Net" is 2000.
Now let's assume that one day you decide to go run a mile and I do not. You are naturally going to burn more calories than I am while you are running. Let's say you burn 500 calories running that mile.
Assuming we both still eat 2000 calories a day, my Net is 2000, but your Net will be 1500 because you burned 500 more calories than I did by running that mile. You ate 2000 calories, but burned an extra 500 (2000 - 500 = 1500).
Now back to how to figure your net for the day....
My Fitness Pal will do it for you in one of two ways. You can fill out the questions and set your exercise level to 0, then manually put in exercise, or you can put in an exercise level and MFP will tell you how much to "net" based on what you told it. for example, mfp may be telling you to eat 2000 calories to lose 2 pounds a week, based on the information you gave it. Then you run a mile and burn 500 more calories (than what you told mfp you were going to be doing). You would then be "netting" 1500 and that's what mfp would show when you entered your exercise into the app.
Some people (myself included) will manually enter our TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) into MFP then just eat/net below that is we want to lose or eat/net above that if we want to gain.
To answer your question of whether or not your net is good for the day, I would have to know what your goals were and if the total you have on your mfp app reflects your tdee. Assuming the 3175 is your TDEE and your net is 2376. That is a deficit of 800 calories. If you maintain that for a week, you would be at a weekly deficit of 5600. Since it takes approximately 3200 calories to lose a pound, you would be on track to lose about 1.75 pounds a week. If that is your goal, then your net is good.0 -
As a male, your base calories seem to be set pretty low (1340s?) and then you're recording massive burns. Are you using a heart rate monitor for your exercise? Those numbers seem really high, but your base daily calories seem really low (those are probably balancing out).
If you don't understand net calories and adding exercise calories, there are other ways of using MFP. I eat the same amount every day (and strive to have calories remaining at 0) and don't log my exercise. Give this a look:

Yes I wear a heart rate moniter and I walked for 4 hours over a large valley pushing a pram through wet mud.
The calories are low but that's what my fitness pal gives me to loose 2lbs per week, I am very inpatient.
And thanks cedarghost it makes sense now, I will refer to that post whenever I'm confused0
