running shoes

Anyone have a recommendation for great running shoes or a preferred brand or a strategy for finding great running shoes? Let's pretend money is not a concern. I'm not opposed to a specialty store...just not sure how to find one or what it entails.

As a note, I have really high arches and a beginner/intermediate-level stride.

I would really recommend going to a good specialist running store. The one I went to I had a guy look at the way I ran - I took a few running steps in the store, and he went from there. I also believe it's hard to tell if a brand suits you until you try them on.

I currently have Asics and love them.

Are just starting to run? I am addicted!

    Have fun shopping!

Running Ratty is right on... a running store is the only way to go. Not only should they stock a variety but the staff "should" be trained to measure, fit and test your gate in the shoe. A good store will also have equipment (many times it is a treadmill) to watch your gate when walking and running.

I swear by Brooks, BUT I am truly flat-footed. Many (if not most) of Asics is molded for arched so you dont' suponate.

    Good luck!!!

I also recommend a running store in your area. My experience at Fleet Feet (in KY) was great. They had me run on a treadmill, and they videotaped it. Then we watched the video together, and the salesperson showed me the way I was running versus the way that you are supposed to run. Based on that, and after measuring my foot, he gave me several different types of shoes to try on with support where I needed it. I ended up picking the Brooks Adrenaline, which is a pretty good running shoe for all different types of feet.

Good luck! It has made a tremendous difference in my running and the resulting aches and pains afterward!:flowerforyou:

I just ordered new shoes from the Nike website. I did lots of research ahead of time to figure out what kind of shoe I needed. I stick with Nike's because I have the Nike + Sports Kit for my IPod. I absolutely love it!! I definitely would have gone to a running store if there was one close... but I live in Podunk MO  and we have nothing around here!

"running shoes" is a very general term when you look at the various types that are out on the market. I would suggest a lightweight cross trainer but only after you've gone to a running store to compare what's out there and talk to someone about the type of workouts you do. Try them on look for something that's going to feel good and not weigh your feet down.

When I had knees to run with I would usually wear a heavier shoe to train in and then lighter weight shoes for the actual event.

My wife and I both prefer Saucony.

I think the best rated shoes is asics *spelling*. I tried some on and they felt like I was walking on air. But I settled for the reeboks because I could not find a style I could live with. A little materialistic, I know, but I wear them to work everyday..lol...

Wow - great information - thank you all! I got into running about 7 years ago and then got out of running about 6.5 years ago. I'd like to start up again, but need some good equipment (found out what shin splints were about a month ago). First stop: a specialty running store to get some one-on-one attention. I had an inclination that was the answer, and you guys confirmed it...and then some.
