Can someone explain all of this to me!?!

I have lost weight by cutting calories, cutting out diet soda and exercising. I am starting to see all this hype about TDEE and BMR, etc. etc. Can someone please explain all of this to me in plain, simple English?

    TDEE """Total"""" daily energy expenditure

how much energy you burn in the day aka calories so if my TDEE is 3000Cals and i eat 3000Cals i will never lose weight. if my TDEE is 3000Cal and i eat 2500Cals i will lose weight at 1lb a week.
    1lb is approximately 3500Cal,
    500Cal x 7 =3500Cal
hence burning a lb of fat a week
If you eat more than your TDEE you gain weight.

    BMR is your metabolism
so if you did nothing all day besides sleep how many Cals would you burn.

diet soda is 0 Cal so really no need to cut it out for weight loss.
  • Theres a post on here called "Roadmap 2.0" or something similar, I think if you do a search you can find it. It explains all of this in great detail.

As for the main idea of what all the BMR/TDEE stuff is, basically your BMR is how many calories you need to eat just to be alive. So even if all you did was lay in bed all day and stare at the wall how many calories would your body need. For me, it's about 2,000 per day.

Your TDEE is total daily energy expenditure, aka how many calories you actually burn up everyday. Obviously this depends a lot on your job, lifestyle, whether you work out etc. I'm a teacher and I work out, so between hopping around a classroom and exercise I guesstimate my TDEE at 2700. As a result my calorie goal everyday is 2300. So (hopefully) I'm eating at a 400 calorie deficit per day.

Hope that helps! Good luck :)

BMR stands for basal metabolic rate. That is the amount of calories your body burns in a day just keeping you alive. It is the amount if calories that you would burn if you were to lay on bed all day and not move at all. It's the energy needed to keep your body temperature stable, your heart pumping, your synapses firing.

However, in real life, we move around every day. Even getting up to go to the bathroom. Urns some calories. That's where TDEE comes in.

TDEE stands for Total Daily Energy Expenditure. It's the total amount of energy your body uses in a day. It's your BMR plus the every day walking around, exercising, wrestling with your dog, etc. if you were to eat the TDEE amount of calories, you would stay the same weight.

By eating below your TDEE (so that you are at a calorie deficit. "Cutting calories, as you say) but above your BMR (so that your body has the energy to fuel your daily functions) you will lose weight.
