a question about eating.

so, I have talked to a friend of mine who said that it is better to stand while you are eat, rather than sitting down because the body is circulating better and burning more calories, as opposed to sitting down while eating.

upon hearing that, it does make some sense to me, but my question is:

does eating while standing make much of an impact over time for weight loss / keeping in shape?

I've always heard the opposite - you should never stand and eat. When you sit and focus on your meal you're less likely to overeat and you can pay better attention to your body's satisfaction signals.

You know what I would do instead? I would sit, eat, be comfortable, and then see if you can't dedicate some additional time moving around during the day, like walking around/etc.

Does standing burn more than sitting? Probably a bit more. But based on that logic why not sleep standing up, and poop standing up, etc? Do you see where I'm going with this?

I'm all for increasing your energy expenditure in fun little ways, but if you get to the point that you're eating (or pooping) standing up so that you burn more calories, I'd suggest there are better ways to go about it.

    Of course it works.

You're at least three times more likely to drop food off your plate, because it's quite difficult to eat a decent sized meal while standing. I'd find it nigh impossible to eat my plate of nachos while standing.

Unless you're well balanced, like a gymnast. Then nothing works.

Makes a real mess out of spaghetti, though.

My mom ate while standing up....because with 5 kids in the family and a 15 year differential in age spans, there was always someone needing something so for her sitting down just never made sense...

she never lost a pound on this exercise method....

however, the 2 hours walks she would take with her BFF after supper, she lost MANY pounds with that exercise method...

so in conclusion, I agree with SideSteel....

why don't you just sit down, enjoy your meal, thank the GOD above you aren't a busy mother of 5 and just take a walk after...

    problem solved.

I think it sounds like the opposite of a good idea. One of the factors that causes people to unintentionally overeat is "mindless" eating, meaning eating while you're paying attention to other things- on the run eating while driving or walking, watching TV, playing on the computer, whatever. The opposite, counterbalancing strategy is called 'mindful' eating, where you pay attention to your food- the flavors, textures, your hunger, etc., and you do this while minimizing other distractions.

There is zero physiological/metabolic advantage to standing while eating, and it can only serve as a distraction. I don't practice mindful eating as much as I probably should, but I do recognize the importance of minimizing distractions as a technique for intuitive eating, and I would not intentionally add extra distractions during my meals.
