I started my weight loss journey 13 days ago. I was 353 pounds (I am 6ft tall)

I weighed in Sunday 1/20/13 and had lost 4 pounds. Then I weighed in on Sunday 1/27/13 and I was down to 341,for a total of 12 pounds lost.

I was not supposed to weigh in until my next Sunday morning weigh in, but I could not resist a sneak peek today,so I got on the scale this morning, and I was down another 4 pounds down to 337. That's 16 pounds in 13 days.

Everything I read say that it's safe to lose 2 pounds a week. I think, because I have such a great deal to lose, that I can stand to lose a little more than 2 pounds a week.

I have my MFP calorie counter set at losing 2 pounds a week ( i tried to make i 3 pounds a week, but it wouldnt let me) I am allowed to have 2430 calories a day in order to lose 2 pounds a week.

My appetite has shrunk greatly, and I only eat because it's time to eat (3 meals a day). I dont snack. Although I am set to take in 2400 calories a day, sometimes I finish with 1300-1500, well under my 2400 calories.I think thats why the weight is dropping so fast.

Some of the major changes for me in the past 13 days:

*Drinking lots of water. Before that,I was not much of a water drinker

* Getting 8 hours of sleep each night. Before that,I got between 5&6 hours

* taking a mens one a day multi vitamin to ensure I am getting all of my minerals & nutrients

I think all of that coupled with my diet,is working well. But is it working too well? Am i losing too much too fast? I feel fine,no issues of not feeling well, etc

I have not been exercising because the gym I joined opens next week. I am afraid that once I start oing there,I may lose even faster.

I want to lose as much weight as fast as possible, but I want to stay safe.

Any ideas,thoughts,or suggestions are appreciated,thans

If you want help, you should open your diary. There are lots of smart people on MFP who can give you some good advice from that.

I can do that, but 9 times out of 10, I am just doing the 'quick add' calories to my meal diary.

    Typical day's meal-

    Breakfast-
1 90 calorie english muffin with low fat butter, and 1 breakstones cottage cheese with fruit....total of 240 calories

    Lunch-
1 lean cuisine meal and a small bag of lays baked chips...total of 400-600 calories

    Dinner-
(if I am at work for dinner)1 subway 6inch sub with turkey, veggies, etc and a side of veggies(snap peas,carrots)..total of 800 calories

(if I am at home for dinner,I eat whatever my wife makes, but do not eat big helpings or seconds too often. This calorie count is usually between 800 & 1300 calories depending on the meal)

So from that, you can see,i am usually inder my 2400 calories no matter what. Sometimes I sneak a banana in during the day

Your first 2-3 readings will be mostly water weight loss. I would try to carry on eating healthily and see if the losses dip to a more sustainable level by the 4th week.

I'd think that at your weight and height, it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect to be able to lose 3-4 lbs a week until you break into the 200's at which point I'd look to take it down to 2 lbs a week so that you don't hit any health issues.
  • Let me paint you a picture. I'm 22, 5"3, 278 lbs. If I exercised as much as I should, and ate completely healthy, I would not be surprised to see a 5 - 10 lbs drop the very first week (over the moon! but not surprised). It's obviously a lot of water weight. But you're a guy, and you're quite *husky*, so you could expect to see a lot more. I don't think you're dropping weight at a dangerous rate yet, but your weight loss should stabilize. And about the "2 lbs rule": yes, it's a good general guide line to weight loss for most people. But for a guy who wasn't stick thin to begin with, you could expect to lose more. Should you keep losing that much though, I would rethink your nutrition.

    GOOD LUCK!

Thanks all,I would not mind losing 3-4 pounds a week until I reach 299. After that, 2 pounds a week does sound reasonable

I would suggest logging out your food just so that you can make sure you're not missing out on anything vital. You don't want to fall short on protein or you'll lose more lean muscle than you want to.
