Blood Type diet??

Ok, I don't mean diet to lose weight, I mean diet, as in the way you eat. My husband and I are prepping to begin trying to conceive and I have been doing lots of research on what to eat, how much to eat, etc. I came across this book at the library. It's all about eating right for fertility and overall health based on your blood type. At first I thought it was an interesting idea (it is written by a practicing doctor. A fertility specialist I think), but after I browsed the type A section, I was kind of horrified. Aparently, based on my blood type, I should avoid all meats (though the occaisional chicken or turkey is ok), avoid all eggs, avoid all nuts except for peanuts and walnuts and load up on tofu and other soy products (um... ew?) oh and no dairy either.
Sounds bad right? But I could probably stomach all that if my favourite fruits and veggies were allowed too. But no. The books says I need to avoid spinach, tomato, sweet potato, peppers, melon, oranges, grapes and strawberries. So yep, that eliminates almost everything I love...
And did I mention it also strongly states that I need to avoid wheat too? wth. What CAN I eat?
Has anyone ever heard of this? I'm wondering if it actually is a fertility practice, because I don't think I could sustain myself on the foods I am "allowed" to have, half of which I have never even heard of.
Just thought I'd share with you all my outrage, lol!

Calories in vs. calories out.
People write these books because people will buy them. Different things work for different people, but in general eat well, consume less calories and you will lose weight. Don't need a book!
Call me a cynic. This is just my 2 cents!0 -
again, not trying to lose weight, this is "claimed" to be a method of eating that promotes fertility and overall health for people with blood type A.
It just seems wild to me. I mean, really, what am I supposed to eat??
And to clarify, I'm not, nor do I plan on following this diet plan. lol0 -
This was a fad diet that came out several years ago. Don't waste your time with it.
There are several more effective ways to control your fertility than through your blood type. If you're interested in non-medical means (IVF, Clomid, etc.) try visiting a naturopath or homeopath to discuss alternatives such as herbs and accupuncture. Of course, before adding or taking away anything, visit your own medical doctor to make sure that what you are looking to do is safe and necessary. If you haven't had difficulty before in ttc (trying to conceive), I wouldn't advise going into it thinking that you are going to struggle with getting pregnant. There are many people out there for whom charting their bbt (basal body temperature) and their cm (cervical mucous) has been very successful. Depending on your age, don't be discouraged if it takes between 6 months and a year, just stick with it and stay healthy.
What a wonderful journey you're about to begin, best of luck to you!0 -
As a fellow Group A blood group-er I share your outrage!!!0

I read about that diet also and as a type A, yeah not going to happen. I can't eat half that food anyway and the other half I wouldn't eat. The rest is what I can eat and they want me to not eat it. No I don't think so.
Just eat healthy and you will be fine. If you have trouble concieving after 6 months, talk with your doctor and see what you need to do. Good luck and congratulations!!0 -
I did read about this diet and thought it was to restrictive, cutting out good, healthy foods.
As far as eating healthy before getting pregnant, my DD just went through this and her Dr told her to start on prenatal vitamins to be sure she was getting enough of all the nutrients. Folic acid is especially important as the baby developes in the early weeks so it's good to start taking them before you get pregnant. Happily for us DD is 4 months along now!
I wish you and your husband all the best as you begin your family!0 -
Just have one thing to say....
OH MY FREAKIN' GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, I feel better now!0 -
I'm A+....and I say WHAT?!?? LOL....thanks for sharing!
And good luck!0 -

I agree. And I've been on prenatal vitamins for 3 weeks now. We're going to wait until I've been on them 3ish months before trying... That's what the doc recommended so I'm going with it.0 -
I honestly beleieve in his theories!!! I know people who have followed it and have had lots of success!0

If you have had problems concieving in the past and feel that you need drastic measure to make a baby then maybe consider it, but my theory is go have fun and quit worrying about it and when it's the right time it will happen! If you have fertility issues that that is a whole different matter... :happy:0
