Women generally have more strength in the lower body for child birth.
  • It might be because guys rarely train legs.... You know their too focused on their chest abs and arms. ;)

In general women are just a bit behind men in lower body strength. A man who has been strength training seriously for 6 months or perhaps even a bit less could leg press 550-600 for 5-8 reps (or more importantly squat 300 plus or minus for a few reps)

Wow. I wasn't even a serious weight lifter and could leg press 375 when I was 16.

No where near that now of course....I kinda let my strength go. Working on that though.

My boyfriend works out a lot more than I do and yet I can lift a lot more with my legs than he can, even all his friends leg press about half what I do. Are females legs just naturally stronger

depends what he's trying to do. If he's trying to stimulate hypertrophy, weight is irrelevant (myofribullar hypertrophy that is). If he's pushing for strength and your lifting heavier with the same parameters, then your bf should be a shamed.

edit: your form may be crap. I've seen guy who pack on 405 on the bar, and end up doing this quarter rep stuff, which is hilarious because they actually believe they are effectively training the muscles.

Well I am very confident in my lower body strength, I can squat and leg press a considerable amount of weight. I love the feeling of hoping on the rack or the leg press after a curl bro and having to throw on some more plates. Although I do have serious man traps and delts...

I guess I should also add that I had my ACL fully reconstructed using my patella tendon, and a significant amount of my damaged meniscus removed a little over a year ago. So needless to say I'm very happy with squatting 170-190lbs and leg pressing 350-380lbs. I really need a spotter for heavier squats, which I'm sure I am capable of but don't trust myself alone.

weight is far from irrelevant, 1RM is a irrelevant but if the weight is not going up then youre not getting bigger or stronger.

sarcoplasmic hypertrophy wise I agree with you. But your legs can still grow if you stimulate it enough. You body doesn't know what 400lbs is. It only knows stimulation and response.

IMO My husbands legs are waaay smaller than mine, mainly because he only works upper body. In my "younger years" I was in sports and a cheerleader so that really helped tone my legs. I know he can press quite a bit, but if you just compared ours side by side it would prb look like I could press more lol!

    for example keep adding reps?

yeah probably but wouldn't be as efficient/effective as 1-20rep range

you could add more reps, use a 3,2,1 tempo, pause the contractions, Flex for 5 - 10 secs after a set. All in all, increasing the time under tension without increasing the weight.

Yep! Men naturally have stronger arms.that is why we can crush them with our legs in a choke hold! GRRRRRRRRR! ):D
  • That's probably true, I don't even come close leg pressing what my girlfriend does.

    those are some small legs.
  • Doubt it; I don't see any biological reason or evidence that suggests that. When I was in high school, I maxed out the leg press machine at 500 lbs. without any prior strength training experience. My bench press was only 60 lbs., though, haha. Talk about disproportionate.

I think its true. I took weight training in high school, and I remember the leg press, I could press 450 lbs, but could not do any reps with that amount, but I could press it. I have strong thighs and hips. Not much upper body strength though. That's probably why men and women fit together so nicely, we complement each other :blushing:
  • When we Max out I can lift what my boyfriend does with one leg, not easy though.
