Powders, whey, flax etc.

I usually get most of my protein for the day, despite being a pescatarian (vegetarian who will occasionally eat seafood). However, as I read recipes for smoothies and watch various television shows, it seems that regular folks have started using protein powders, or adding whey and wheat germ etc, to their foods- I generally try to eat pretty close to nature- fresh fruits and veggies, organic yogurt and the like.
I would imagine that some of these powders, proteins, and products are relatively "clean" and "natural" while others are more processed or artificial. I know flax is a good seed, and I could see where adding it to my diet would help me out some and "wheat germ" sounds natural enough- but what about the rest of these products? What are people's thoughts?
Is there a compelling reason to start adding powders to my water/smoothies etc.? Have I been missing out?

What does your protein requirement day everyday? Are you meeting it with what you are already eating? Also flax is a great way to get fiber and its has all kinds of benefits. I sprinkle ground flax on my cottage cheese with bananas and its very yummy. I always say, if you don't need to add the protein powder don't waste your money....good luck!!!:happy:0

Unless MFP says you're incredibly deficient, I don't think you need it. When I changed my MFP nutritional goals after I started running, I was consistently and dramatically under on my protein (like 100 a day, zow!), and decided to add a quality whey protein powder to my diet. I consume it as a shake, and it helps me get my water in. 2 scoops is 40 protein, and 16 oz of fluid.0

Thanks Ladies. That makes sense. I'm not really missing out on anything according to MFP, so why buy something extra? I like the logic.0
