low on calories

Can someone please explain to me why some think its OK and healthy to lose weight by only consuming 600-800 calories a day?? I would be dropping pounds like crazy too if I ate so little. Not realistic though in my mind. Who normally eats this low just about every day?? Just dont' think this is a healthy, safe way to drop weight.
