Thoughts on taking a daily multivitamin? Like a One-a-Day, for example.
Waste of money? Helpful? Indifferent?

I am vitamin B12 and D deficient (per blood work at my doctor). Taking a multi makes up for the deficiency (again, confirmed by blood work). Yes, you do excrete whatever vitamins you don't use but you also will absorb what you need if you are indeed deficient. It is meant to be a supplment to what you are missing, so still try to eat as balanced of a diet as possible.
I like vitamins with no food dyes or extra additives, so One a Day is not my cup of tea. By all means use One a Day or whatever brand if food dyes and other ingredients don't bother you.0 -
Best thing to do would be to get your vitamins and minerals from food instead of in a pill form. If you have low levels of certain vitamins/minerals as the previous poster pointed out than it's good to take a suppliement.
Some vitamins and minerals will just be excreted by the body if you consume more than your body needs.. some won't. If you eat a well balanced diet most people will not need to suppliment. I only suppliement with vegetarian forms of omegas and a b 12 as I don't get enough of either in my daily diet.0 -
I view a multivitamin as cheap insurance. In a perfect world we would get everything we need from food but..............0

Well, since this is the final ruling....
I think if you are on a calorie-deficit, like you probably are if you're trying to lose weight - then you are not likely to be getting all the nutrients your body needs from the food you are eating. If you are really good about nutrition, then you may not need them.
I've taken a multi vitamin/mineral supplement for decades. I also take Vit D 2000, as I live in a northern area, and I trake fish oil, since I know I don't get enough.
To each their own, but for pennies a day, why not?
Oh - and I'm never sick. Like it's been six years since I even had a cold.0
