You can usually buy frozen veggies pretty cheaply. Look for fresh veggies and fruits in season. Eggs are a great source of protein.

Fresh veggies are great.. frozen too (because they give you the nutrition facts right on the bag... easier to log hah).

Canned stuff too can be healthy and low calorie - like tuna. And one of my personal favorites is dried lentils. If you cook them properly, they will plump up and you'll see just how much bang for your buck they offer! lol They are great as a soup or tossed into a salad.. etc.

I try to find sales and buy frozen meat in bulk when I can to save some money. If you can stand eating left overs (some people can't eat left overs - grosses them out) then I would encourage picking stuff up to make large quantities of one thing, that way you can divvy it up in serving sizes, and freeze/refrigerate for future consumption. Frozen veggies are good because they last longer than fresh veggies, and are a little less expensive, though you do lose some of the nutrition, as well.

Dry/canned lentils, beans, chick peas, eggs, frozen veg, bulk or "family pack" meat (portion and freeze), whole/large flake oats, bulgur, brown rice, big bags of large carrots (much cheaper than baby carrots), apples, whole wheat flour (for making breads etc.), bagged milk (freeze unopened bags until you need them). If you don't have a lot in the way of seasoning/spices, pick up one new thing every week (aim for bulk or packaged rather than in the jars, which is always pricier).
