skinny legs are not attractive

Hi I'm new here today and wanting to gain weight, I'm 6'5" 140 currently and would like to be at least 180. I have really long skinny legs and I hate them. My upper thigh at largest point measures 17.25" and at knee 12.5". Way to small for my height. Would love some tips on building leg muscles.

Squats, lunges and step-ups with heavy weights and lots of protein. :-)

I would think some heavy lifting with squats and lunges would do the trick!
  • I was afraid squats were the number 1 exercise. I hate them lol

lol! I hate them too but they do wonders for legs and glutes, even core muscles. I have a love/hate relationship with them!

Squats (and there are lots more types of squats than you could probably imagine, if you hate one try another, goblet squats, and slpit squats and dumbells squats), deadlifts (once again there are tons of variations) and lunges (again tons of variations).

The important thing here to remember is that just because you don't like or feel comfortable with one particular way of doing them doesn't mean you won't love another.

Also, you are going to have to be sure to get plenty of calories and protein. You appear to be built like my husband and perhaps with a similar body type/metabolism. He was an iron worker, so obviously a job that required ALOT of picking up heavy things and putting them down. He ate well over 3000 calories daily and stayed super slim. The only way he managed to put on any size was when he quit work, and now is a student, and he still has only put on around 20 lbs is still considered underweight. And he is still heating well over 2500 calories per day most days.

You're 6'5''???? You should be at least 200, not 180. Get to work, boy!

I'll also tell you.... be patient. It will take time. And if you're naturally thin.... you're looking at eating at least 3,000 calories per day, if not more. Have you looked into how much you should be eating given your job/activity level, etc?

Also, if you want bigger legs:
    -Squats
    -Deadlift
    -Lunges
    -Leg Press
    -Leg curls
    -Leg extensions
    -Calf work

But remember, it will take time, do not get discouraged. But it's definitely possible. I've seen some pretty small guys get pretty damn big. But they worked their butts off to get there. So if you really want it, make it happen.

My boyfriend has suuuppperr skinny legs and I think they're wonderful! But if you don't like yours, I agree with everyone saying squats and lunges. Anything that works your leg muscles will help beef them up.

6'7 here. Deadlifts and squats have left me with 25" thighs and 17.5" calves. Still looks pretty thin at this height though. Make sure to eat food. Lots. Enough to gain about 1lb/week.

Edited to add your legs aren't half as skinny as some I've seen, relax ;) When you gain weight they'll get bigger anyway. You should play football with your friends, my boyfriend has really muscular legs from playing

Eat at about a 250-500 calorie surplus to your TDEE. Minimum 1g protein per pound of lean body mass (if you know your bodyfat % - if not, shoot for at least 0.8g per pound of bodyweight). Get on a full-body 3x/wk workout program and hit it hard.

I'm 6'6", so I feel your pain - tall guys and squats aren't a marriage made in heaven, but I do them anyway. If you really can't/don't want to squat, you have other options - deadlift, leg press, etc. - but if you want your legs to grow, you've got to hit them hard and give your body lots of calories and protein.
  • Man I love to squat. Hate lunges. All good advice. My trainer told me if I wanted more power I needed to hug and love the squat rack.

I used to do housekeeping for a family that were all near or over 7 feet tall (even the 11 year old girl was already 5'9. The dad was the tallest at 7'5ish). They didn't stand up from chairs.. they unfolded.
The 2 teenage boys were sticks. I don't know if either of them were more than 140 lbs. The dad had a desk job and a gut.
My point is, even some one tall and skinny like you can get fat if you don't add in the ever so hated (in the beginning) exercises.

It sounds like you're just too skinny in general and not just in your legs at 16.6 bmi. Do you eat?
