For someone who was just beginning, what would be the three upper body and three lower body exercises you would recommend learning first?

I am going to meet with someone today who is supposed to show me how to use some machines and get started, but I am scared I might be too unprepared to be prepared.

Deadlift, squat, bench press, overhead press, strict curl, calf raises, and weighted pullups if you can manage them.

    What he said.
    Stay away from the machines.

I'd add bent over rows to that list and that is all you need. Even for a year of serious work. Machines are for use between real lifting only ;)

If you have the choice, stay away from machines and use free weights, and if I HAVE to choose just three each...
Arms : Bench Press, EZ-Bar Curls, and French Press
Legs : Deadlift, Calf Raises, and Roman Deadlifts

If the gym you are going to does not have free weights and you have to use machines.....

Chest Press, Shoulder Press, Bicep Curl for the arms, then Leg-Press, Leg Curls, and use the Leg Press Machine to do Calf Raises.

    This...

Also, looking into Starting Strength or something similar. I started doing Starting Strength about a month ago or so and it's phenomenal.
