Beta Blockers Stopping Weight Loss?

I was wondering if anyone was / is in the same boat I'm in? When I joined mfp I lost 100 pounds in 9 months, then reached 110 pounds lost by one year. At that one year mark I was put on a beta blocker for annoying pvc's. Since I started the medication I've continued with eating at a deficit and continued with my workouts. My weight loss has completely stalled. I have lost zero in 14 months and have to keep fighting harder as it's like my body is trying to gain a couple of pounds. Not to mention I'm more lethargic during the day, working out takes more effort and the meds make it difficult to feel when my blood sugar is low (type 1 diabetic). I'm going to see my doctor next week to get off this medication and hopefully will get some energy back and see the scale moving once again.

Anyone else have issues with weight loss on this medication?

I quickly put on 10 lbs after starting the same med, plus when I exercise it starts the heart a pounding. Very frustrating.

Thanks for the reply. I saw my doctor and I was able to come off the beta blocker. He did say it was the cause of my weight loss stall. Been banging my head agains the wall for past year and it was this evil drug I was on. And yes, exercise was more difficult. I put a great workout today BB free.

I too am having difficulty losing anything more than water weight. I now believe it is my beta blocker. I began taking Atenolol in 2007 for inappropriate sinus tachycardia. In that time I've had to triple my dosage as my body has developed a tolerance. I now take 75mg a day. Since I began the med I have gained 40 pounds. I was underweight when I started on it, so didn't mind the first 10 pounds or so. But then I kept putting on weight. Now I cannot seem to lose it.

I've been reading about beta blockers and it seems some of the older ones, like the one I take, is notorious for causing weight gain and an inability to shed pounds easily - apparently long time users of some beta blockers end up with metabolisms that are slowed down 30-50%!

I see my doctor on April 2. I will be asking if we can

    a) try weaning me off over a period of two months, to see if the tachycardia has resolved itself

    or

    b) if that doesn't work, go with a NEWER beta blocker that doesn't have such drastic side effects - like Coreg.
