What Can I do besides quit my job?
I have worked for the same company for 8 years. About a year ago they hired a new guy as "my assistant". I had no say in who they hired. I have tolerated him for over a year now and I can't take it any more, I am going to snap. I absolutely hate this guy. Yes, hate is a strong word, but I hate him. He has no personal hygiene, he is absolutely disgusting, he talks non-stop, butchers the english language on a daily basis, has no common sense or social graces, and overall makes my days at work miserable.
He sucks up to the boss so that he thinks he is God's gift but then makes stupid mistakes that I have to fix. I can't talk to my boss about him because he is so in love with this guy. Do I have any options besides quitting my job?

What is the chain of command?
Are you technically his superior?
If so, do you have any role in his performance evaluations?
Why does your boss love him? Is it because he doesn't know he makes so many mistakes?
Document your work and his work, so you have documentation to show those mistakes.
However, if you working in a right to work state, there isn't really much you can do.0 -
Just my opinion but if you are thinking of quitting anyway I would say talk to your boss first and if nothing happens go to HR. As a manager I may like someone but the job comes first and if someone that has experience and who has been with the company comes to me I would def. take their complaint seriously. But that is just me. You never really know how people will react but like I said what do you have to lose? Good luck!0

Well, you were looking for work when you found this job, no? You are going to have to speak up, and as others have said, it would be good if you had a lot of documentation, so get started on that. When was the last time you checked on your references? Make sure they would still recommend you and that their contact information is correct, maybe ask some other folks if they would act as references. Look at the job market just a bit to see what's going on and where you might land if they axe you. Then confront - you might be fired, but you will be prepared, and you will be doing the right thing. Don't make it personal, don't get mad. The worst thing you can do is suffer in silence. And you might be surprised how they react to honesty, confidence, competency, and courage. Now, get going, and good luck. 8-)0

Is this guy from Austria? Sounds just like someone I worked with a few years back (we even gave him an 8-pack of Irish Spring soap for Christmas one year).0

I was given a technician by my boss one time. He kept screwing up, and one time I found some stuff that he just hadn't done which was really screwing up my deadline. I just told my boss that he was no longer allowed to work on anything that I was responsible for. But then again, we were subcontractors, and my boss had requested technicians from the prime contractor. So he was given to my boss, before my boss gave him to me. As others had already made the same assertions as me before, mine was the straw that got him fired.0

Positive reinforcement and speak with HR about the hygiene issues. If this person is your assistant I would honestly sit down and speak with him. Maybe he's not aware of the errors he's making? If he doesn't shape up it then talk to your boss and lay it all out. If your boss after that doesn't follow through I would take that it reaffirmation to seek employment elsewhere.0
