Past IT Band/Hip problems - wanting to run again, help?

So before the holidays I ran in my first 5K and it was AWESOME! Unfortunately while I was training I messed up my knees and my right hip (I strongly suspect ITBFS). Sadly haven't been about to see a PT yet but I've have doing foam rollar exercises, yoga, and ice packs. I'm doing better and would like to start training again for another 5K in May. Is there anything that I could do that will help prevent re-injury?
Purchasing new runners is on my list in addition to modifying my interval training. Would a knee band or brace help?

I'm currently suffering from this myself - it sucks!!!
I've been doing some research and have read somewhere that it can be a side effect of a weak hip so hip strenghtening exercises could help. Also, no hill-work or running on uneven surfaces. Ice, rest and deep-tissue massages are supposed to help. I'm planning on hitting the treadmills for a couple of weeks, much to my horror, to try and help me get past this. I'm also re-incorporating cross training this week and lots and lots of stretching.
Good luck and I'd be interested to know if you find any other tips/tricks to help.0
