Lunges hurt?

so I'm trying to add lunges to my daily excersise programme,
but they feel really akward and although not painful they feel sore and unnatural, as if my legs just dont bend that way.
This is how I do them:
I stand straigh with my feet al ittle apart
then I step out with one leg, and bend the other leg
while I keep my back straight, then I go up, and step back
and do it again with the other foot. This is how I see people do it
everywhere else, and sometimes I hold weights aswell, but it just feels wrong?
Any idea what I am doing wrong, if anything, or why it feels so weird?

I wouldn't use weights until you get the form down. Look up some YouTube videos that explain how to do a proper lunge. You can also do reverse lunges which are easier on your knees.0
