Are you supposed to eat the amount of calories according to the BMR or less? Also, should you eat back the calories you burn through exercise?

You should net at least your BMR. If you use MFP's method (the default setting) then you do eat back your exercise calories.
You can also use the road map method, which gives you a flat number of calories and then you don't eat back exercise calories:

BMR is coma calories, so you should be eating above that. Unless of course you are in a coma.
Seriously though - the road map thread Angel linked above is awesome - that's the method I use. Find your BMR and your TDEE based on your activity level, and eat between those numbers. Easy peasy.0 -
