Where's the (sodium free) Beef - Canadians time to revolt!!!

Beware of your steaks and roast in Canadian grocery stores!!! This is new news for Canada, but apparently it has been done in the US for some time. The beef you buy at the grocery stores is now getting pumped full of "seasoning" ***read sodium!!!! In an attempt to provide a more consistent flavour and tenderness (ie make tougher cows better) the regulators have given the go ahead for adding enhancers to beef. I am SO SO SO angry :explode: If you go to the meat section of your grocery store - Loblaws, No Frills, Metro are all on board and pick up a steak or roast in the usual cellophane wrapped package, notice the sticker on it that says "seasoned".

I bought steaks for the bbq this past weekend and they were terrible - yes...tender for the cut...but oddly textured and flavoured.
Check out the nutrition and for 100g of steak the sodium was 260mg!!!! Compared to 90mg for the same amount of the lean ground beef with no "enhancers".

My good friend is a food scientist, we have great discussions on these things, she tells me it is a growing trend. We have been doing it for chicken and pork for awhile, but just started with beef. What ticks me off is that it is just quietly replacing the regular beef in the meat cases and unless you are a label reader and notice that suddenly your beef has an ingredient line, you will think you are just buying steaks or roasts as usual - with 4 times the level of sodium!

UGH - this is NOT good news!!! I recently read that people were lobying to get Sodium labeled as a "dangerous additive"!!! What happened to that I ask.

Good thing my hubby bought half a locally raised cow this year. I don't have to visit ANY meat departments for beef or pork (he bought a pig too). Another reason to get out and BUY LOCAL!

Once again I have to recommend Food Inc. the documentary on how our food is grown, Simply frightening these days. The way they force feed farm animals to get them to market sooner, the way they genetically alter our seeds and spray our fields. Most of the farmers are subsidized by the government and have no incentive to grow healthy food anymore. Support your local farmers markets and organic growers.

I noticed that with Prime Ground Turkey this weekend...it said "seasoned" - I read the back and it was listed as "Rosemary Extract". I remember my mom buying chicken breasts that were seasoned and they had such an odd texture. My local [small] grocery store still has a butcher section - I think I need to start buying meat there again.

we either buy meat from a butcher, we also had a friend that gets meat from a friend that raises cows, quite pricey but worth it!
