it seems to be working for me,but i exercise and eat some (if not all!) the calories back so can have that extra 200 calories or so a day, which i find a lot easier! between 1200-1400 seems ok to me,i'm 5,5' in height and fairly active.

That was a very helpful post! I am new to MFP and was still unclear on how this was calculated. Thanks for the clarity!

    I'm 5'2
    Starting weight: 120
    Current weight: 113
    Goal weight: 110
    Ultimate goal weight: 105

I am on a 1000 cal/day diet and, with exercise, always seem to fall below my mark. I never go hungry and feel happy, healthy, and energetic!

For the whole eating under a 1000 calories, look...you are going to do what you want but check out the link below at some of the stories of people who thought it was okay (especially because they weren't "feeling" hungry a lot of times) but ended up regretting it. A bit low....

I'm 5ft, 122lbs, wanting to lose 10lbs, quite inactive although on my feet a lot of the day with my job.
1200 cals seems a little low, not sure if its sustainable?!
Does anyone else have similar stats and what is your daily cal intake?

I started with 1200 calamity, but now I have upper it to 1600, feel so much better, and have lost a pound a week average. I have similar stats to yourself. Hope this helps.

It is low BUT you can add calories to that intake by adding cardio. For example, I am 5'4 and started at 146lbs about 3 months ago and wearing a full American Eagle size 8. Today I weighed myself (and have been consistently) and I am at 126lbs and a solid size 2. I incorporate at least 30 minutes of cardio 4-5x a week and about an hour of weight training and my whole body has changed. It has to be a lifestyle choice. I love the gym, and it has become part of my social, recreational, and spiritual life. I've met some great people but if I want to just focus I can do that too. Join a good, friendly gym. I like the YMCA. No meatheads. Just people doing stuff. Good luck!

Thankyou for the advice :) I'd love to join a gym but at £55 ($90) per month we can't really afford to at the mo. I will certainly dig out some exercise videos or maybe go jogging, although I have never jogged in my life and the thought fills me with dread haha

If you want, check out this link by MFPer Heliotsdan - It'll give you a detailed walkthrough (with pictures even) on finding your TDEE and calculating what you should be eating.

Also, if you are worried about the calorie intake, I also suggest you read this thread that has numerous people who met their goals and are maintaining. Some for years and they also provide their calorie intake and how often they work out.

Yes, this is can all be overwhelming and complicated , but you are more than welcome to ask questions on the post.
One of the things that I have found that has been one of the best methods for me to get fit is to understand fitness. To understand where all these figures, etc come from.

The good thing is once you get the hang of it - it is something you'll be aware of constantly and you'll get a better understanding about your eating habits.

So I HIGHLY suggest making the effort to take every chance to educate yourself. Even if you don't end up going with any of these methods, calculations, etc - at least you understand what they are, where others are coming from, and maybe they will still be able to help you figure out what is best for you.

Thanks so much for posting this, I figured out everything and 1200 is not enough for me I should be around 1500.

Alternate walking and running so you are winded but not gasping and gradually add more running to the mix. Great way to get in shape.
