Best Heart Rate Monitor

I am looking for a heart rate monitor and need some recommendations. Ideally, I would like it to also count calories, but not use a chest strap (not sure how effective those are). Under $100 would be a good price range. Thanks!

Is there a reason you don't want the chest strap? From what I've read they're going to be the most accurate by far, which is something you want when you're using it to count calories. I have a Polar FT4 and I love it. I was worried about the strap at first, but it's so small I put it on before I leave for the gym and usually forget I have it on.

Chest strap is a good option. You dont even know it there when you are working out.

I have a Polar FT7 the next one up from the FT4. It is such a great tool. Makes me work out that little bit more when I look at what calories I have burnt.

I was worried that the chest strap would be uncomfortable or bulge from under my shirt!

The Polar strap is mostly elastic so it's no more uncomfortable than a bra band and you only wear it for working out so the tiny bump from the transmitter really isn't any issue. Since you're worrying about it being noticeable I'm wondering if you think a HRM is something you can wear all day to get your calorie burn. If so it isn't the item you're looking for.

I dont notice it at all. Sometimes I forget its there and drive all the way home from the gym with it still on....

The transmitter on the FT7 is fairly small. Its the wrist watch I find bulky
  • Before I bought the Garmin 405, I used a Polar with the chest strap for years. I can't remember which model but it was around $100-$125. You don't even remember that you have it and you don't notice it at all.
  • I have the WaHoo. It pairs beautifully with my iPhone and the app is lovely.
  • Just got my ft4 and I can honestly say the chest it fine.
    Hardly notice it :)

I love my Wahoo, as well. If you already have a compatible smart phone, all you need is the strap. It runs around $80.
