Scanner Inaccurate?

I've been using the scanner a little lately after upgrading my phone but I note often it will enter something similar to the item I've scanned but not the actual item or the cals will be wrong. I just scanned a product that came up with 183 cals but looking at the wrapper it says 160. The other night I scanned a bottle of cider and it added a totally different brand I'd never heard of with much higher cals then just now I added my vitamin tab with the scanner and again it added a different brand with totally different nutrients in it! Has anyone else noticed this? I'm starting to wonder what the point in using the scanner is if it so often wrong.
How are foods allocated to barcodes? Does MFP do it or can anyone do it? Just like how there are incorrect foods in the database that are member added?

I think it grabs the closest thing to what you are scanning. For accuracy purposes I always just enter the info myself if the scanner brings up something that isn't close to what I am eating.0

But how does it recognise what I'm scanning? Someone must have allocated that product to that barcode at somepoint.0
