How many calories do I need to eat?

I keep reading that 1200 calories/ day is not healthy and that eventually I will hit a plateau or go into starvation mode and stop losing weight. I don't want to starve myself, I want to lose weight the healthy way, but I don't understand how many calories I need to eat in order to do that... It says my BMR is 1516 calories, so that's the number of calories I need to eat per day? And if I workout and burn 700 calories a day, do I need to eat those 700 calories back? Because if I do I don't understand how I'm losing weight...

I'm so confused right now, thanks for any help!
