Wrong. Muscle DOES weigh more than fat. 1 cubic inch of muscle WEIGHS MORE than 1 cubic inch of fat. Period.

A pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat which weighs the same as a pound of feathers and all those weigh the same as a pound of gold. However, they all have different densities so those four substances will take up much different volumes of space.

volumes and densities and weight thank you :) !!
i hate that too. a pound is a pound is a pound..... some just take more space than others.... so if youre losing massive amounts of inches but hardly much weight, then yes.... you probably are replacing your fat with muscle. in response to some earlier post lol

    end mini rant :-p

OP, you will never stop this. Those with educational backgrounds heavy in physics and other hard sciences must learn to simply smile and change the subject. Back in the day I had the argument with a phys ed instructor - this statement appeared in a freaking quiz on a True and False section. She gave me the points back after finding out my majors, but said "regular" people (!) needed to know the information, therefore she would not change the test.

    Let it go. Walk away.

This is a valuable argument here, as most of us care more about volume-we want to take up less space. Years ago my uncle and his oldest son weighed the same, but uncle was pudgy and cousin was buff. Which would you rather be? (Easy answer in this group.)

There'll always be some smart Alec revealing his ignorance by stating the obvious.

Surely the average human being is capable of understanding the finer details of the basic statement: "Fat weighs more than muscle".

Do we really need to spell it out that we're talking about "by volume"?! :grumble: Are people that dense

    Yes, yes they are.

For those that aren't that dense, they like to play the semantics game thinking that it makes them look oh so much smarter than everybody else..........

You don't weigh yourself by cubic inches.

You don't see the number on the scale when you look in the mirror.

It is true that muscle weighs the same as fat. One lb of muscle weighs the same as one lb of fat. The idea or reasoning behind people saying that maybe you are gaining muscle when you are working out but not losing weight is not a complete fallacy. People at relatively healthy weights doing p90x or other types of high intensity exercises gain muscle mass due to muscle hypertrophy and they can be burning fat at the same time. The end result is a change body composition where a person has a lower body fat percentage, leaner figure (due to muscle being more dense and taking less volume with the same weight) while maintaining the same weight.

I'll take her advice. All others.... naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

This thread is the epitome of why there are so many overweight people right now. Arguments like this make people think losing weight takes a PhD in science, nutrition, etc. I am totally confused now. We are making this sooo much more complicated than it needs to be. Too much science going on here for me! I think I will let my doctor, MFP and Jillian MIichaels do all of the science/math/work for me and see how it goes.
