Pedometer mileage and activity level

I wore my pedometer today out of curiosity to see how many steps I do. The total for the day was 22,844. 3 miles of that was the walk to work and school, which I logged separately as exercise. 3 miles is (I think) roughly about 6000 steps. So that leaves 16,000+ steps just from my normal activity, which I am not logging as exercise.

I have my activity level set as lightly active. Do you think that 16000 steps sounds about right for lightly active?

    Walking and Activity Levels
Researchers at Arizona State University have established baseline activity levels based on the number of steps taken each day. People who take fewer than 5,000 steps are considered to be sedentary or inactive. Those who take 5,000 to 7,499 steps daily have a low active lifestyle. Somewhat active people usually take 7,500 to 9,999 steps per day. People considered to be active take 10,000 or more steps per day. The surgeon general recommends aiming for 10,000 steps every day.

Thanks greenolivetree. That was the sort of information that I found when I googled, and I already knew that the recommended number of steps per day was 10,000 from the NHS website etc. I was wondering though whether anyone had any more specific knowledge themselves, especially relating to the activity levels here on MFP.

I walk around 20,000 steps a day and am moderately active since it is just normal walking around.

I have myself set to sedentary. I get about 5000 steps on workdays, desk job, and can get even less on weekends. But with intentional exercise, I average 11,000 steps daily. I just let my fitbit add in the extra calories each day and I get on average an extra 350 cals. So 16,000 not counting your actual exercise sounds pretty active to me. LOL
