I'm fairly new at healthy eating and I was wondering what I should always have on hand in my pantry?
I already have some brown rice and canned fruit and soups.
What else do you think a person should always have in their pantry for healthy cooking?
Or maybe is their a good website to get this info?
THANX

    Kashi bars :)
Those things are delicious, and they are sweet enough that they can beat back chocolate cravings!

:flowerforyou: Right off... Virgin Olive Oil and Grape seed oil... I have additional cans of tuna / albacore, oatmeal, dehydrated onions, and protein powder for those oh-no days that I didn't plan ahead. :flowerforyou:

It's more what you should have in your fridge than your pantry :) Non-perishables are usually loaded with extra sugar and sodium to extend their shelf-life. Fruits and vegetables are a good start. You need some protein, so fish and chicken and red meat occasionally. Nuts (particularly almonds) are quite good for you - they contain "good" fat, but watch the fat and the calories on them. Anything in moderation is okay, just pay close attention to the sodium/sugar in products that won't go bad :)

I don't have a lot but I keep boxes of instant rice and pasta, canned chicken & tuna, pretzels, sunflower seeds, canned fruit, soups and spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, etc.

Whole grains (amaranth, quinoa, millet, teff, oats)-for me these are vital
Pasta (always whole wheat or quinoa based-no white refined stuff)
Rice (brown, wild-not really rice, lol, and red-hard to find)
Lentils (I prefer the red variety)
    Beans-dried (flagolet, adzuki, black, garbonzo)
Whole grain flours-I keep mine in the fridge so the don't go bad (whole wheat {pastry and all pourpose}, soy, barley, spelt, amaranth, buckwheat, tritricle)-yes, I bake a lot!
Flax and chia seeds (I keep mine in the fridge)
    Spices-everything and anything
Herbs (ground or fresh-but I think fresh is much better)
    EVOO
Vinegers (red wine, balsalmic, apple cider)
    Vegetable Broth (adds great flavor)
Coconut milk (I love Thai foods)

FYI: I'm a vegetarian and these are the staples of my pantry and might not suite your specific needs...but if you are looking for ideas these are interesting items to consider.
