Pedometer question

I've just ordered an Omron pedometer because I want to increase my daiy activity level outside of my workouts. I've got a heart rate monitor to use during my actual training but I also want to track my daily steps so that gradually I can try and walk more during the day.
Does anyone know if it's possible to 'pause' the pedometer and put it to one side for example while training or showering etc. so that it doesn't track your movement during some periods or would I just take it out of my pocket and then put it back in when I'm ready to re-start?
Also, I know that the pedometer will track calories burned in addition to steps taken and kilometres and I want to get an accurate as possible picture of how many calories I'm actually burning in a day including those tracked on the pedometer, those on the Heart Rate Monitor and sleep calories but is there a method to try and work out sleep calories burned?
I know it will never be completely exact but I'd like to think that I could get a slightly more accurate picture than the TDEE calculators found online. Surely calories burned during my waking hours from both devices plus sleep calories will give me a more acurate idea of my TDEE and then I could monitor this over the course of an average week and work out my TDEE -20% from this.
