I usually shop at Tesco but decided to try Sainsburys to see if the food is better quality

I usually buy Tesco Haricot Beans In Water 400G,

http://www.tesco.com/groceries/Product/Details/?id=262167712

75 cals half a drained can

So bought Sainsbury's Haricot Beans In Water 410g,

http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/groceries/index.jsp?bmUID=1360146025851

Website says 84 cal per serving the tin says 2 servings but 143 cals half a drained can?

On the Sainsburys website it says 63 cals per 100g which seems standard across different brands but 63 x 4.1 / 2 = 129.15?

Hmmmmm... perhaps one of the websites is wrong? What does it say on the side of the tins? (and don't trust what it says on MFP - I often find people have inputted them incorrectly). Also, does it definitely refer to drained weight, rather than including the liquid (which may include sugar or starch)?

If I were you I'd go with the higher amount as 260 calories for a tin of beans sounds about right.

I'm shopping at Aldi, Lidl and Sainsburys right now due to money being tight - I get whatever I can at the cheaper shops then head across the road to Sainsburys for the things still on my list.

At the risk of sounding like a snob, I do prefer the quality of Sainsburys and their fruit and veg lasts way longer than other supermarkets. They also often have really good deals on the beans and pulses so I always stock up on lentils, chickpeas, beans etc when the offers are on.

    Quite a difference I agree.

perhaps the Tesco beans hvae more water in the can. So of the 400g a higher proportion is liquid? I generally shop at Sainsburys (top up veg and nice cold meats, canned fish etc at Aldi!) but I don't have any tins in the house to check.

Someone is wrong somewhere. But on the whole you are still eating a healthy, relatively low calorie food item.

I have found a tin of Sainsburys Chickpeas in the cupboard. So, not the same but one thing stood out.

The weight is 410g, but the drained weight only 240g.

I reckon your looking at drained weight vs undrained weight. I've had that problem before. Lots of labels are misleading!

This. The cals per 100g of 63 would give you 2.4 x 63 = 151.2 cals per tin (supposing the drained weight of haricot beans is the same as the drained weight of chick peas). = approx 75 cals per half tin.

Look at the product's nutrition information for words like "average" or "estimated".
I do not believe that any caloric values either for foods or for exercise are anywhere near 100% accurate. I have no science or references to back this up, but I always assume a margin of error somewhere north of +/- 5% to be the norm.
