How do you track your calories burned? Know my Garmin HRM was not meant for the pool... Just curious. I think the MFP calories burned are generally over what my HRM says

  • I (very unscientifically) estimate. I usually knock off about 50% of what MFP database says I have burned.

I have the 310xt, which is water proof. I wear it in the water, and pop up between laps every once in a while to get readings (stroke changes or whenever). Then I just assume it's pretty even throughout the whole time (which is tracked on the watch, assuming a single stroke), and do a full edit of the garmin data in Connect based on that. It's not perfect, but it works.

I also don't swim more than about once a week, so if I'm off it "comes out in the wash" anyway.

I use a Garmin Swim and it does a calorie burn estimate based on the time spent doing a type of stroke with the standard numbers (age, height, weight).

I had a good wave of gadget envy looking up the device after reading your post. I no longer swim enough to justify buying one, but back in the day it would have been a nice tool for my uncoached sessions. Thanks for sharing.
