Hula hooping the calories off , anyone?

I got this neat hula hoop a couple of years ago from a friend and I love it - mostly because I find it very easy. Problem is I've never really seen any results, but that is probably because I've never continued for long enough.
I have read somewhere that doing hula hooping apparently burns a lot of calories, but can you guys confirm this with your own experiences? I just find it so easy and relaxing doing it that I can't quite trust the statement (and I do it quite quickly as well).
Have you got any positive or negative leanings towards hula hooping?
Please share, would love to know if there are other hula hoopers out there!

I was under the impression that once you got good you don't move much. Unless we talking doing extra jumps and moves and adding extra hulas.0

ok ask yourself this, are you doing some work? Let me give you an example. If I am moving around the furniture of my apartment, then this will hardly be a burn for me. I might not even sweat. However, ask my brother or sis-in-law to do the same and they both will be huffing and puffing within 10 minutes.
Hula hoop will be a rough workout for me. However, since you've had practice, you probably don't have to work hard and have learned tricks for it. Maybe challenge yourself with newer tricks, intensity etc. As long as you "feel" a good burn, it doesn't matter if you hula hoop to burning calories off or move furniture!0 -
Hula hooping is great..I do it with a 3lb weighted hoop, sometimes I do 20 mins each way and its a great core workout! In 40 mins I can burn 400+ calories according to MPF estimations but they can be a little high so I tend to half the calorie burn.0

I just love how people who don't hula hoop think it doesn't burn calories. I can't tell you how many calories it burns, but it has to be a good workout - especially for your core.
Have you considered a weighted hula hoop? I got one for my wife and have tried it a few times - it seriously leaves the muscles sire.0 -
I have a weighted hula hoop and i love it! When I was in college, i used to study (i;.e. readings in textbooks or notecards for french class) while hooping so I kiled 2 birds with one stone by studying and working out. It's a great core workout if you make sure you're using your hips and abs rather than just bending your knees. It isnt quite a calorie burning workout though because it isn't cardio, but rather, it tones and strengthens the muscles.0

I just got one today. I'm happy to hear that some people feel it gives a workout. I think I will be one of those people as I haven't been very active till recently (since MFP).0

the promotional figure for hooping is 300 cals in 30 mins but that is high intensity hooping and difficult to sustain
pres ankles and knees together and drive hoop as hard as you can from your ankles with out whole body moving as a wave - see how long you can do it fore
I teach hoop dance and there is so much more you can do too
hand spins and isolations and waves ( poi like moves) are great for bicep and shoulders and wrists
you can hoop on your but thighs and chests ( make sure you warm up and are loose)
multiple hoops are great for co-ordinations
and don't forget to try going in the opposite direction0 -
Take a hoop dance class! They are fun and you will learn so many more things to do with your hoop. I get bored just going around and around, but I can hoop dance for all day! Well, probably not, because it wears me out.0

I have both a weighted hoop and a hoop suitable for hoop dancing. I've never considered it exercise, though- more just a fun hobby.0

If you make sure to focus your movement on your core and hips, rather than just bending your knees, then it's a great workout. See how fast you can go and how long you can go to up the intensity. I hula hooped last night while rewatching a Doctor Who episode ^_^. I used to be able to do it for the entirety of an episode (1 hour non stop) but now I have to take breaks every 15 or 20 minutes -_-0

I hoop 20-60 minutes a day. I love it. I always sweat and my core is becoming very defined though I still weigh 184. Hooping works and is not a high intensity cardio workout. Core toning is imparative to fat loss and I would recommend it to everyone. It also tones the low back to support back pain sufferers. If you have a low back problem, be sure you are keeping your abs tight when hooping to absorm the pull so your low back isn't.
Hope you try it. You will never want to quit. So fun.0 -

I think you mean it is not high impact. If it isn't high intensity for you, there is so much more you could be doing with you hoop!0
